Exporting from previews

I am going to export a lot of photos in monitor size (2560 x 1600 px). The pictures are stored on an extern HD. What is the fastest and best way to export them? If I have the HD connected, it takes a lot of time, because the photos are rendered from the originals. But I am unsure about the result if it's not connected. I have both standard (monitor sized) previews and smart previews. Which of these are used for export if the originals are not available? Many photos are cropped, and that make the smart previews smaller (and will be upscaled), while the standard previews will always maintain the proper size I think.

Will LR only export from the smart previews, or will it choose the largest available option?

Because you can't export if neither the originals nor smart previews are available, I conclude that at least Smart Previews are required.

Thanks! It seems that I have to leave my HD connected then.

So the real question is "WHY" are you exporting these image at a Reduced resolution when what you really need to do is Copy the Originals (then you have the Originals and not a reduced resolution copy) to that external drive.
Are these RAW files, JPGs, Tiffs, PSD????

I am exporting DNG files to a screensaver. I want the exported images to match the screen resolution, but I guess I won't see much difference if the images are just slightly upscaled.
