Error message "Photoshop CS5 has stopped working" won't load tif photo

Photoshop CS5 seems to load OK. When I try to open a Tif image I get the message "Photoshop CS5 has stopped working". When I select the appropriate response, Photoshop shuts down.

It has now loaded the image, see image, but it is corrupt. Originally saved using Lightroom.

It could be that you have a bad file on disk.
Does this happen with other files and other formats?

If so, then more likely you're looking at a bug in your video card driver causing issues when trying to display the image. Try turning off GPU drawing in Photoshop's preferences, restarting, then opening the image.

That seemed to work. Thank you for your time.

First, have you installed all the updates for Photoshop?
If not, go do that now.

And if turning off GPU drawing worked, the problem is still most likely in the video card driver -- so updating that may help (but NVidia and ATI both have some known bugs in their current drivers, so it may not work).

My computer reports that the drivers are up to date. Thanks for your time anyway.

Your computer "up to date" is usually getting drivers from Microsoft - which are years behind what is available on the GPU maker's website.
