Lightroom CC: Error duplicate photos

I migrated my Lightroom CC Classic library about a year ago into LR CC, today going back over old albums I was trying to edit an Album from 2015 and noticed it was missing 400+ photos.

No big deal, I hadn't edited them yet and still had the original RAW files. However, on trying to import the missing photos, I am getting an 'error - duplicate images', but I have searched and scrolled the LR CC All Files both by date and by file name, and the images are not there.

I can import other photos.

I'm guessing it's something like it has imported the file info into the catalogue as part of the migration, but not the file itself into the library.

Any ideas how to fix?

This kind of thing has happened to me several time and it always turned out to be my own error - although one can argue that a clearer software interface would have prevented it from happening.

In your case obviously I don't know whether it's a bug or if you did one of the things that I did.

A) Sometimes I import photographs and forget to assign them to the collection that I intend to work in.    I can still work on those photographs because the selection criteria defaults to "latest import".  I can reopen Lightroom later and work on them as long as it's still in the mode of "latest import". But if I go back later and then choose the collection that I thought I was working in, those photographs are not there.  They appear to have vanished, because I never put them into that collection in the first place.   SO, then I try to import those photos (thinking that they vanished) and I get the error message you cited:  duplicate images -- because those photographs were already imported into that catalog.  Sigh.

B) Similar situation but my error has to do with filters, either I forget that I have a filter turned on, or I think that I assigned a text or rating or color to a set of images when I really did not.

It would not surprise me at all to learn that you really did encounter a bug in the software.  I'm offering the above possibilities merely based on my personal experiences.

Thanks Art, I'd thought of that. Even if I clear all filters, and look under 'All Photos' instead of the Album they should be in, the photos are still not there.

Turn off the "Do not accept duplicates (whatever the wording)"and then import the ones you want
