Photoshop cs4, eraser tool has stopped working. I've restarted the program, restarted the computer, reset the brushes. Eraser sill won't work on layers....it does seem to work on the background photo and the background duplicate, and erase portions of it, but does not work on the layers. How can I fix this?

What are the exact settings of the Tool (see the Options Bar) and could the Layers be locked in any way (see the Layers Panel)?

Only the background layer is locked...the others are not. I use a Mac, I dont see an options bar. However the setting of the eraser seems to be.
Eraser tool chosen , size...doesnt' matter what size I use it still doesnt' work, hardness, have it at 100% , flow is 100%, erase to history is unchecked-which I've tried checking it and the eraser still doesn't work.
Brush presets , right now smoothing is the only one checked, I had checked all the types to see if it would work...I tried to reset the brushes, then reset all locked settings. Eraser still won't work. Last month I used the program without issue, everything worked fine. Things like this would happen on and off over the years, but either restarting the program or computer would be all I needed to do.

The options bar is the part at the top that shows the options for the current tool, and allows you to change those options. If it is not visible, you should make it visible from the Window menu.

What is the Tool’s Blend Mode?
Could you please post a Screenshot?
Have you reset the Eraser Tool yet?

hardness is 100%, flow 100%, opacity 100%, though those shouldn't matter as I've used them before at different percentages just fine.

I have reset the eraser tool, didn't help. screenshot enclosed.

Sorry, forgot there is no Blend Mode.

You seem to be trying to erase on a Layer Mask and have set the Background Color to white – hit D to reset the Colors and it should work.

Thank you!!!!!! I did that and it is working!

I'm not sure why that happened? So, where the foreground/background colors are, if the background is white, the eraser won't work? Good to know..never noticed its whereabouts before but obviously I've not happened to fall into that before......many thanks to you for your help!

When erasing on a regular pixel Layer the Background Color is irrelevant, but when working on a Channel (and a Layer Mask qualifies as that) it matters as there is no transparency available.

Trash your locked background. A free one automatically replaces it, and the eraser tool works.
