Eraser Tool Malfunction and Complete System Crashes (2 topics)

I'm having issues with CS5. It flips to the eraser tool suddenly and when I select another tool it shows the tool selected but still continues to be in the eraser tool. I usually can just restart ps but not this time. Not even a full system reboot worked. Photoshop is completely down.

Also, since getting my new mac a few months ago photoshop will completely crash my entire system. Once I force reboot (not even a soft reboot will work) any file I've worked on in the previous few hours is truncated and lost.

An application cannot crash the entire system: only low level drivers, OS bugs, or hardware defects could do that. If you get a gray screen - that's a kernel panic. If the system locks up, shutsdown or reboots - that means you probably have bad hardware (RAM is most common problem).

As for the tools changing: wacom tablets can do that (by design for the eraser side of the pen), or pressing a tool shortcut key and holding it.

What version or OS X are you running? Do you have all the OS updates installed? Is Photoshop up-to-date? http://adobe.ly/PS-Up-To-Date
