Photoshop CS6: Entire document frozen with liquify

Normally, when an area is frozen to prevent it from being affected by Liquify function, it shows as bright turquoise. When I attempt to use liquify, the entire document shows as bright turquoise and I cannot do anything to it.
No masks are engaged. In case file size was a factor, I tried it with a small file at 72dpi. Same result.
Color mode is RGB.
Am running CS6.

If you go into Liquify, and hold down the cmd/ctrl key, the (Cancel) button will change to (Defaults). If you click Defaults, does it then work for you?
