Lightroom: Filename field loses focus when moving between images

I use the File Name field in the Metadata panel to rename some photos one at a time, since I use descriptive file names. When I enter a file name and use CMD+Right Arrow to select the next photo, LR3 used to highlight the next photo's file name (so it was ready to rename instantly). Now, when I use that keyboard shortcut in LR4 the next photo is selected, but the File Name field is not highlighted. This means I have to highlight it myself using the mouse. This adds a great deal of effort, since I have to move my hands between the keyboard and the mouse for each photo. Can we get this functionality re-instated?

P.S. - I'm aware of and use the Rename Photos function when possible, but since I use descriptive file names it doesn't always help.

I'm curious why you bother with "descriptive" filenames for anything other than renditions.

I hand photos over to friends often. I like the files I give them to have helpful names they can use. I have my photos organized by date. Within each dated folder, the photos are named with a 2 or 3 digit sequence number followed by a short descriptive filename. Such as "03 Chris with trophy". So when I give these over to someone, they're sorted in the right order and it's easy for them to find photos they care about even if they don't have photo management software.

John--sure it can be done during export and elsewhere, but what does that have to do with the OP's point that something appears to be broken?

James--not seeing this behavior with LR4.3RC...it behaves like version 3. What version of LR are you using? Does this behavior show up with other fields in the metadata panel? Are there any other keyboard utilities in use that might be interfering? Does it persist after restarting?

On LR 4.2 for Mac OSX 10.8.2 on a Macbook Pro 17". Yes it seems to behave the same with other metadata fields. It's not consistent. I'd say it actually works the way it "should" about 10% of the time. But most of the time I hit CMD+Right Arrow and the next photo is selected, with the metadata field highlighted for a split second before the metadata panel updates it's information (during this, there's a fraction of a second where there's a progress wheel in the metadata panel as it's refreshed). Once the metadata updates for the newly selected photo, the highlighted field is deselected.

I did have the Mac Keyboard and Character Viewer active in the menu bar, but turning that off didn't seem to make a difference. I use a Microsoft IntelliMouse but that also made no difference. The problem persists on restarts.

I wonder if I should try LR 4.3?

Thanks for the help!

James... your description sounds a lot like some really annoying behavior/bug I have experienced since the early days of LR. I would select a large number of images, then change a metadata value, e.g., Job ID, tab to the next field, then start typing the intended value of the newly selected field. But LR stupidly interprets what was typed as command keystrokes and starts doing all kinds of stuff that was never intended. So apparently while it's updating what was previously typed, the focus ends up somewhere other than the intended field. It was so annoying I finally gave up on using this approach. I had to wait for LR to do it's updating thing for a while before the focus returned to the next metadata field. AFAIK, this has never been fixed.

Doesn't cost you anything but time to try out LR4.3RC to see if they have made any changes in this area. But be sure you are working with a backup catalog, or a test catalog.

When Ctrl+moving between images, the filename filed stays focused in 4.2 on Windows.

Thanks, Dorin. That's good to know. Makes it seem like a bug for us Mac users. Anyone else experiencing this or not on your OS?

Upgraded to LR 4.3 on my Mac. Problem persists. Also, the metadata panel refreshes slower than before. Sigh.

I am also having this exact problem, running LR 4.3 on a Mac Pro using OSX 10.8.2.

Prior to the 4.3 update, I had the problem occasionally and initially after the update, everything worked OK but now (two days after updating) it does it constantly. It does it both moving 'up or 'down' through metadata fields (Tab key) on the same photo and moving across photos in the same field (using CMD arrow key).

I'm working with thousands of photos and enter a lot of detailed data for each photo, so it's very annoying to wait a second in between each field for the panel to reload and then find and click on the field I was going to edit next.

It's frustrating, I switched from Aperture because it was having issues saving metadata to the files correctly. Now I feel like LR is comparatively clumsy and slow on entering metadata, geotagging, and moving through different collections. Add to that the fact that you can't reorganize the fields or make new custom ones in the metadata column and then this problem, which slows me way down...
