Enhancement to Lightroom Filename Template Editor - Number of photo within current directory

I'd love to see a new numbering format that allows me to include the photo number in the current directory that the photo is being saved to.

For example: during a single import I'd like to include several photos from Sept 29 and Sept 30. Let's assume that I store photos in the following directory format: YYYY/MM/DD. What would happen is that all photos imported for Sept 29 would start at 1 and count up, and then once the import of the photos from Sept 30 began it would start over at 1 and begin counting up again. The end result would look like the following:

2014/
. 09/
. . 29/
. . . 0001.jpg
. . . 0002.jpg
. . . 0003.jpg
. . 30/
. . . 0001.jpg
. . . 0002.jpg

Relying on the camera to perform the numbering and just using Lightroom's filename number suffix is insufficient since so many cameras work in different ways and don't always allow that.

My current method relies on a Python script and several imports to a temporary catalogue and back. It'd be great to see this implemented in a less convoluted manner. Sequence ordering only works if I'm only importing a few days worth of photos but becomes a mess with my current situation of importing several years with of photos from my phone.

If this is somehow already possible I'd love to know how it's done. Thanks!

Unless I'm missing something, I think Lr can do this now - are you familiar with the renaming options?

Upon import, use 'filename number suffix', or after importing use 'original number suffix'.

Filename number suffix uses the number that is stored on the end of the original filename. That is not the same as numbering from 1 to N and starting over for each directory.

Ah - a sequence number that starts over each directory - gotcha. Indeed, Lr does not support that "natively" (without a plugin). Fingers crossed for next version..
