I would like to see the (Comments) panel in Lightroom made available to use for individual photo files. I understand that panel is currently only applicable to collections shared thru Lightroom Mobile or Published Service connections.

What do you want to be able to do with it? Use it to leave yourself notes on the photos? Or something else?

Me too!  It's really 'notes to self' rather than a public comment - a critique of the photo and a suggestion as to how I could have improved it/what I can learn from that

Yes, there are times where I would like to leave descriptive info where keywords are insufficient, a (to do) list specific to that image, etc.

Yep, that makes sense. Understanding WHY you want a feature helps the engineers decide how best to grant your wish, for example, they might add a Notes panel rather than polluting the Comments panel.

The EXIF tagset of the Metadata panel (on the right side of Library mode) has a User Comment field you could use for this purpose. Note that the field starts out tiny, but it will keep expanding as you enter more text.

Thanks, I'll look into using that. I wasn't aware of the expansion feature!

I would like to see a comments ability as well, but preferably as a sticky note that pops up when you hover over a photo. Or a notes panel would probably be ok too. I may have taken a couple of series of panoramas, and want to add a note for myself to each about the settings I used, the type of development I want to do later on them, etc. Basically a place to jot down quick notes about an image or series of images.

Does the User Comment field in the Metadata panel (EXIF section) not meet your needs?

It is small and sort of hidden. And on export i would not want to include it with the image. Besides, I have to move to the Library module to view it. It would be nice to have something available in the develop module too, something that is easy to see at a glance. There is ample room on the toolbar below the image to add a note option. I can come up with a workaround with plug-ins to customize my metadata field order and even strip the notes field, but that would not be very elegant...

Makes sense.

The User Comment field does resize automatically as you enter more text. As you mentioned, you can define your own tagsets so that it's more prominent in the Metadata panel, and you can use a plugin (Metadata Wrangler) to remove it on export. But that does take more work to set up.
