I'm working on a Quickmask project: Lesson: use the Elliptical Marquee tool to draw a perfect circle, hold the shift key as you draw to constrain the ellispse to a circle. Now enter quickmask mode by pressing Q. The circle you just drew will appear red solid circle. But when I do this , everthing outside of the circle is red. What am I doing wrong?

Sounds like you have quick mask set to the reverse mode of what your instruction/project author did (show the mask where the selection is NOT).

Double click the quick mask icon in the tool bar to get the quick mask options, and change the "color indicates" mode. Or just use it as is and remember that the color is reversed from your instructions.
