Photoshop Elements: PSE 5 hangs when selecting thumbnail to edit in Photoshop CS3

I have used Elements 5.0 and Photoshop CS3 with no problems until today. Now when I am in Elements and click on a thumbnail to edit in CS3 the thumbnail becomes an hourglass with the red banner. The photo appears in CS3, I work on it and save it. When I return to Elements the thumbnail is an hourglass which will not disappear. If I click on the hourglass the photo appears but them goes back to being an hourglass. How do I get my thumbnail back?

Hi Catherine,

The thumbnail should return to its original form after the red banner is not present. If you still see an hourglass, right click on the image and from context menu select 'Update Thumbnail'.
This should make your thumbnails come back.

I had already tried to use the Update Thumnail feature but it made no difference. I am able to make the image return by clicking on it but it will almost immediately return to the hourglass. Any other ideas?

'Update Thumbnail' should have fixed.
The other thing I suspect is that there could be some problem with your catalog.
So, please repair and optimize it.

1) Go to 'File' menu --> 'Catalog'
2) Select the catalog that is opened (it will be marked as current)
3) Hit 'Repair'. Complete repair process.
4) Once 'repair' is done, hit 'Optimize' and complete optimize process

Repair and Optimize will take time depending on number of media items in your catalog.
