Elements: memory leak creating a book

I have a book with 20 pages; if I open it, eventually, the machine bogs down and elements is taking 1.6GB of memory. It will happen without doing anything but it's
faster if I browse through the pages.

I am disappointed, I really wanted to use elements instead of the free things that are tied to a particular printing company but elements is acting a lot worse.

How much RAM do you have?
How much RAM did you tell Elements to limit itself to in Preferences?

Under normal operation, 1.6 GB would be easy for Photoshop to consume, and might not indicate a memory leak.

Do other applications slow down? If so, your system might be paging because other applications are also using a lot of RAM -- and you might want to turn down the RAM usage in Elements to account for them.

Although, and i'm not sure it's related, ever since I fiddled with the memory, the layouts tab does not display anything (i have an empty gray area where the layouts once were)

This might be because of the theme you have chosen. When you are in Basic mode, not ever theme might have a layout.
Try switching to Advanced mode and then go to Layouts panel. There you will find layouts.
also, With 4 GB memory, it should not disrupt that much th proceedings of your systems.
But yes, you can always go an increase the performance by assigning more hard disk space to the product. Launch Editor from Welcome Screen, Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance
If you hae multiple partitions of your harddisk, click on others in the list below.
Also, on the left hand side, you can see a slider indicating the percntage of memory alloted, increase or decrease as per your requirement.
