ELEMENTS: How can I import duplicate files?

Is there a way to import duplicate files in PSE12 organizer? I am aware of duplicate files, and do not WANT to delete the duplicates...Yet, PSE is not letting me import them. Seems like there should be a preferences option to allow this. I do not understand why this would not be allowed. It should be brought to my attention, but it should be the users choice whether or not to import them, IMO.

Ryan,
PSE stops the import of duplicate files. There is no such preference that allows you to do so. If you want duplicates of a file, you can do so in ELements. It creates a copy of that file if you do File>Duplicate.

I'm not sure you understood my question...I'm not looking to duplicate an existing file...rather, I already HAVE a duplicate of an existing file, but it is located in a different directory and I want both of them to be imported into the catalog.

I realize this isn't a very efficient use of storage space, but for certain specific photos, this is how I want to do it. For example, lets say that I go on vacation to Hawaii and take a really cool picture of a sunset. I want to keep that photo in the same folder as the rest of my vacation photos. However, I also want to keep a duplicate copy of it in a different folder, called "beautiful sunsets." Yes I know I can tag these photos with that keyword (and I do), but I also prefer to keep my photos segregated into folders so they are easy to navigate by folder structure.

As you said, you can tag these photos with keywords or include them in different albums.
For what you want to do, which I do not recommend, you can select your files to duplicate and export them to a new folder, then reimport them in the Organizer. That works without even renaming (which I would strongly recommend).

Renaming sounds like the best option then...is there any way for PSE to export a list of duplicate file names and locations so I can manually go in and rename the duplicates? So far, I've only seen a pop-up window with a list, and the fields are so short that I can't see the whole file path...

No such feature in Elements; other external tools can help you to locate and renamed existing duplicates. The problem is that renaming outside of the Organizer makes the files 'missing' in the catalog.

This is a chicken and the egg problem. I can't add the duplicates into the organizer because they have duplicate names. If they aren't in the organizer, then I cant rename them in the organizer...therefore they must be named using Windows Explorer. But if they are re-named in Explorer, then they must be added back in as missing files...

...adding missing files to the catalog isn't that big of a deal though. At least apparently less of an issue than trying to catalog duplicate images!

You can add to the catalog duplicate files with the same names (in different folders) as described above : by exporting and reimporting.
Otherwise, the Organizer is very good at preventing duplicates (even if the file names are different...) That's a general rule about file management in a database system. 99% of the user complaints about duplicates are due to the refusal of the organizer to add already catalogued files!
As you have said, reconnecting renamed files in the Organizer is pretty good if you know in which folders they are.
