Elements: Organizer shows some thumbnails and not others

I just installed elements 9 and have been importing photos into the organizer, file by file. As the organizer pulls the photos it displays thumbnails of the recently imported photos. Some show up and others have this icon in place of a picture.

This happens immediately upon import. No broken links or reconnects needed.
I'm thinking of abandoning the Adobe elements organizer for good. I've been with Adobe since version 3. I've had issues since version 7 off and on and I've rebuilt this catalog two times now.

Any suggestions?

Kevin,

Does other software, let's say editor or windows explorer, displays the thumbnail fine?

Thumbnails are instantaneous in Windows Explorer 7. I've only imported a few folders into Elements because this is happening.

You could try right clicking and choosing update thumbnail. I sometimes have this problem in Windows Explorer too.

There is no problem with Windows Explorer. It shows all thumbnails perfectly. I can't get Elements to show them all as evidenced by the screen capture above.

did you ever find a solution to this? I have used PSE9 for about 1 1/2 yrs and it just started doing this to me with all my newest imports. All the old ones are still fine for thumbnail viewing, just everything in about the last month.
This may be a "premium editing software" but for a hobbyist I have had about all I can take with the idiosynchrosy's of this program.
Thanks,
Jeff.

No Jeff...no solution. No one seems to know (in this thread anyway) and I stopped using it. I won't ever upgrade again if this isn't solved. I've been using it since version 3 but Picasa is looking better and better. These missing thumbnails are totally random too. no rhyme or reason.

Kevin/Brenda,

Is it possible for you to share an image (which is shown as broken thumbnail in Organizer) with us?

We would like to investigate what is causing the problem.

Thanks,
Akshaya

Akshaya, I will repost the image showing the broken thumbnails. These same thumbnails are visible using Windows Explorer, Irfanview, or any other program. But they won't show up in Photoshop Elements 9.

Kevin,

Sorry, looks like my earlier ask was not clear enough.

We would need a file for which Organizer is not able to generate thumbnail. By looking at that file, we can try to see what is different for that file from other ones.

Thanks,
Akshaya

Yes Kevin, we can see the issue in action, but we want to take a look at one of the files so we can determine why PSE Organizer is not able to create a thumbnail for it. My guess is that there is some sort of metadata attached to the file. This kind of thing has happened in the past, usually it's something extra that scanners add on. You can send it to me directly: bnemecek [AT] adobe [DOT] com.

As a workaround, if you take these files into the PSE Editor and then go to File>Save for Web, this will strip the metadata from the file.

I'm glad everything is working now Kevin.

To everyone else, Kevin and I talked and everything is straightened out. It seems the cause of the issue was some damaged files from previous versions of Photoshop Elements. Kevin removed all previous versions of PSE along with all of their support files. Now all images are producing thumbnails correctly. There were two images not producing thumbnails, but this was due to their size. Photoshop Elements Organizer does not create thumbnails for images over 56 megapixels (his were 64).

I googled about this problem and ended up here. Hopefully I'm allowed to post in threads that are already solved.

I've been having a similar problem for a while now with my PSE 9. It usually happens after I've edited my RAW images. The broken file icon shows up as in the screen shot above, but only if I'm viewing at certain sizes. Usually if I move the slider to the left to view the thumbnails a bit smaller, the broken icon goes away and I can see the images again. If I'm in the slideshow view mode, sometimes the broken icon shows up, sometimes it doesn't.

It appears random, as then sometimes ones that used to have the broken icon end up being fine and then ones that were fine end up with the broken icon.

I checked in my control panel to see if there were any other versions of PSE showing up in there, but didn't see anything other than PSE 9.

Any suggestions?

Thanks so much.

When I scan images in my photo scanner, sometimes the reulting image file sizes are quite large (over 100MB) When I tried adding these image files (in TIFF format) to Organizer, the thumbnail does not show the preview of the image. I just see the grey thumbnail icon with the blue triangle and exclamation. However it shows previews for other images that are smaller in size. Windows explorer displays all the image thumbnails just fine regardless of file size, why does your program not display them? Can this be fixed with an update?

Elements can't render images that are over 56 megapixels in size. You'll have to reduce the size of your scans. I'm not sure if they've expanded the size for Elements 10 but Adobe is aware of this issue and understand that as image sizes continue to grow they will need to make this adjustment in the future.

That's disappointing considering windows explorer manages to display thumbnails just fine regardless of file size. Also for myself and others that have fast processors and memory + solid state drives and/or storage drives with very large capacities, really the large file size isn't a problem to deal with. There shouldn't be a limit, and if there is one, there should be an option to override it for those with faster machines.

I guess I won't be using the organizer until this is fixed, I'll have to rely on windows explorer instead or another tool if I find one.

I get a broken link icon when displaying large size photos in
PE 9 & 10. You told me this was fixed in 10 but it is not.
We went round and round about this (Case Number:0182690097).
Signed,
Very Disapointed

I've had this problem with both versions of PSE Organizer that I have used (6 and 10). Actually, in general, the Organizer is the worst example of a photo organizing software that I have had the displeasure of owning. I use it mainly because I like the editor. However, it is amazing how slow and unwieldy it is. It is next to impossible to move files around much less folders for reorganizing. It is incredibly slow (I used to think it was my computer, but not much better on an intel Quad core with 8gig of ram). In my opinion, whoever is on the team that has had ten years to work on this part of Photoshop Elements should lose thir jobs.

I have the same problem with my thumbnails in PSE 10. I don't get it. I didn't have this problem in 9. It seems to affect my new imports that were established after installing 10. It seems to be very random whether the thumbnail image shows or not. Most images are under 5mg.

Like others, I can right click on the tumbnail that doesn't show and clich "edit with photoshop editor" and the second I enter edit mode it shows. I just exit out the edit window without saving and the thumbnail now shows.

Surely there is a fix for this problem?

The most likely cause to this issue is a corrupted thumbnail database. This is supposed to be recreated when upgrading your catalog between versions, but something may have prevented this from happening correctly. Try following the steps here: Troubleshoot catalog issues | Organizer | Elements 6 and later

I need to add that it is not with all images recently added (post 10 install). Just a random number fail to show the thumbnail. Version 9 worked perfectly fine.

At the momemnt I am just clicking on "photoshop editor" for every picture and that makes the thumbnail appear properly.

I have been trying to convert from Picasa to Photoshop Elements 12 but I have the same problem as reported by Kevin over three years ago. This is not due to broken links. It happens with jpeg files from my Nexus 4 and the problem goes away if the files have been previously edited in Picasa or I edit them in PSE 12. The thumbnails display perfectly with all other software both on my phone and Windows 7 laptop.

I was expecting benefits from converting to PSE 12 but I'm sticking with Picasa for the moment!

These two behaviors are probably not related. For the thumbnail issue, have you tried any of the steps listed above?

For the second issue, does the Editor launch by itself if you don't try to open it by sending an image?

Although the issue I reported caused a lot of frustration at the time, I'm pleased to confirm that it was only a temporary problem. It may have been related to an android phone app update. Thumbnails now display perfectly for new jpegs. Thanks to Brett for the excellent support!

I am now experiencing this same problem. It started a few days ago. Some file download fine and others are broken. It seems, after just reading all the comments, that this has been happening for four years or more, that there would be some solution. My photos open fine in Explorer. I have Light Room on my laptop, but haven't used it a lot. However, there is not a problem downloading or opening files from my SD card in this program. Please don't tell me there is a conflict between these two programs, since they are both Adobe.....

I have now encountered the same issue. Just clean installed Windows 10 and restored the catalog from a separate hard drive. Some thumbnails appear initially then disappear. If I transfer a file to the editor it warns that it may be damaged truncated or incomplete then opens perfectly. Amended copy of file then saves and displays a thumbnail. Not convinced there's anything wrong with the image files just the way PSE 13 is working with them. Run the whole lengthy exercise twice with same result. I need my thumbnails back!

I am having a similar issue on PC.  When I open organizer, most of my pictures (which when I initially installed them were fine) are grayed out with a question mark and a little red symbol in the top left.  New computer running windows 10.  When I click on any of the images, the program crashes.  I have to go to task manager to make it close.  I have tried optimizing and repairing the catalog.  Obviously have tried a cold reboot as well.

The red icon you see on the top left corner mean that the files are 'offline'. In other words, when you imported them they were on an external media which is no longer plugged in or which is plugged with another drive name/letter.
When you have 'offline' files, you need to plug in the original drive in the same exact way.
