I have  a very old Elements 6 which has been working perfectly for years with 40k photos until yesterday when i got "the default catalogue cannot be opened". I have tried repair/optimise to no avail. I do have a Elements generated backup that I have not restored yet but anyone any ideas?  The file "my catalogue" is only 103k.  Is it as if the catalogue has been lost or reset.

Do a search for a file named 'catalog.psedb'.
It's a file in a hidden folder under the Programdata one.

If you find one with a realistic size and date, you can open the organizer by double clicking on that file.

Found it !!!! Thank you. It must have become "detached" from the Organiser for some reason and it had been set up in a custom location rather than the Programdata default.  All OK now. Thanks again.
