Elements 2018: Reset Face Analysis untagged all my manually assigned People tags

My Elements catalog had People tags I assigned manually over many years. I recently upgraded to Elements 2018 and (of course) the automatic face analysis was enabled by default.  I do not want the overhead of automatic tagging so I turned it off. I also hit Reset Face Analysis as I assumed this would remove ONLY the Face Analysis results.  Bad idea! Reset Face Analysis untagged all my MANUALLY assigned People tags. (Actually a few tags survived because Elements crashed during the Reset Face Analysis but most of the damage was done.)

There is indeed a note on the options screen saying that Reset will delete People "stacks" but it does not explicitly say it will undo all manually tagging of people. This text must be improved as a bare minimum.

I'm not happy about this as I fear I will have to review my 12000 photos and retag all the people.

I do have a backup catalog that is a month old. Is there any way I can restore from that backup just the photos that have people tags and bring them into my current catalog again?

I had the exact same problem as I did the exact same thing after upgrading! My problem is I have 50k plus photos...ugh

I thought just face tags would be deleted not all people tags. If it says that I missed it. The few face tag file/format I did have from my older PSE 2015 would lockup any full backup attempts I made in PSE 2018.

no answers here in 2 weeks not a good sign. I am trying to figure out how to get my people tags off an older pse version without messing up all my recent work.

I can not believe there is not more about this here as we can not be the only ones having problems!

I recovered my situation albeit with more manual work than I had hoped. It helped that I had a backup of my catalog.  I restored this to a temporary folder.  At a bare minimum I could then view the structure of my People tags.

I was hoping to do something like:(a) In the backup, use Ctrl-W to write the tags to metadata.(b) Import those pictures to the new catalog. Of course a side effect of this is duplicate pics with same image but different metadata. I hoped there would be any easy way to remove the old duplicates.
(c) Create my own equivalent tag structure called MyPeople in the Elements Keywords section.(d) Match the imported keywords to the MyPeople structure.(e) Remove the old People duplicates that had lost their tags.

However I couldn't find a good solution to removing the duplicates (either using Elements or using a duplicate file finder. )

So in the end had to re-tagged my people photos using my new structure manually. (I only had 100 or so of such images).

Given that you have nothing to lose now, you could perhaps allow Face Analysis to have a go at it, and then apply your own MyPeople tag hierarchy to the images found by Face Analysis.
I hope you find a solution, but certainly PSE should have a more helpful warning of the destructive effects of Reset Face Analysis.
