Elements: PSE 11 Organizer does not sort alphabetically

There is no way of organizing files in alphabeticall order for us who has been giving names and numbers to our files for decades. This is very frustrating as it is not possible to scan all pictures in filename order and to fool the system by changing exif data is time consuming. Please fix this bug and respect us old schoolers who has 10.000 thousands of pictures in our registers. The whole Element community waits for your positive response :)

Which version of Elements Organizer are you working with?

Brett,
Photoshop Elements 11 Organizer does not have alphanumeric sorting by file names as did all of my previous versions (2-10). Like Tia, I have thousands of photo files named sequentially but whose dates are not the same sequence (some have been renamed, some have been re-scanned from slides). I know there is a partial and clunky work-around involving instant albums but then I can only work in that specific album. This is such a major over-sight that I have had to request a refund for my PhotoShop/Premiere Elements 11 (I complement Adobe for promptly issuing a full refund). I can now only use PSE/PrE 10 but I am fully prepared to send my money back to Adobe for a corrected PSE/PrE 11 and to continue my yearly upgrades as I have done for the last 10 years.

That is correct. We are aware of this and looking into what we can do.

Paul,
I believe I just called the US help center and explained that without alphanumeric sorting, I could not use PSE-11. I may have asked to speak with a supervisor, but they readily refunded my money (I had bought directly from Adobe).

Hmm, and that's about where I am. I've used PS since version 1 and all of the Elements versions also.
The Oganiser I'm sticking with because of the facial recognition and because it builds a database: two features not in LR.
I'm scanning and have around 25,000 items so far, and am bemused at having to print contact sheets out in the crude printer function that is native to Win7: 35 items to a page.
It seems bonkers to me that files can not be printed in name order from within Organiser, and yes, I want to view then by folder and individual file names as well. Most shots in a folder are sequential, after all.
Anyone using it seriously is going to have some sort of incremental file name structure.

True, Lightroom does not have a facial recognition ability. But I'm not sure what you mean by Organizer builds a database but Lightroom does not. They are both database driven applications using which work with a catalog. It's very similar in fact.

In Organizer you can (pre-version 11) sort by name in Folder Location display mode.

Had I known that PSE10 didn't have this problem, I'd have returned my PSE11 and purchased the older version instead. I'm new to PSE coming from Photoshop & Bridge, and the loss of file names strikes me as an extremely poor design decision in PSE11. It's no doubt too late for me to change, so my decision is whether to trash PSE11 and go back to Photoshop.

BTW, because I'm merging pics from multilple sources, not only do I need to sort by file name, I need to sort by original date/time also, and Organizer 11 seems to use a modified date instead. So my pics are sorted by when I last edited them, rather than by when they were snapped. What's up with that?

I strongly recommend that you call Adobe, explain that you need alphanumeric sorting and ask for a refund.

I agree with the need for alphanumeric sorting. Every file I have is sorted that way and the choices now available in PSE 11 make a mess of visualization. I am thinking about reverting to PSE 9, despite many fine improvements in PSE 11 (such as geotagging in Places).

I have found a workaround that, while somewhat tedious (especially after switching to OSE 11 from PSE 9), has -- so far -- worked for me. Select a folder having pictures in "My Folders" view, right-click to reveal "Create an Instant Album", click to create the album, open the resultant album in Albums view, and set to sort by Album Order. You can then manually move any pictures within the album to whatever order you want. Note that you can use "New Album Category" to create something equivalent to a file folder hierarchy. It would be so much simpler if folders could be sorted alphanumerically so we would not have to make an album but at least this kudge seems to work.

I fully agree that it is necessary that we can sort our photos by file-name or file-number. I have many slides and after the holidays I made slides with a titel for a slideshow. Now I am in trouble. PE put the titel-ones at the end, because PE sorts by date.
I have PE8 and expected that this was solved in PE 11, but no.
If this problem is not solved in a short time I have to look for another program, unfortunately.
Please Photoshop-makers try to have more feeling with what your customers need.

Sorting by file name in Photoshop Elements Organizer 11. Sorting by oldest or newest is awful when you are trying to find a photo but do not remember when it was taken. This was a great mistake and or omission.

I have come up with an awkward work around solution. Fortunately, when I updated to Photoshop Elements 11, I did not uninstall Photoshop Elements 10. So, I use Optimizer 10 now and do not use Optimizer 11. I really shouldn't have to do this if Adobe had not eliminated the option.

I do like the improvements Adobe made to Elements 11 Editor, but as a result of their arbitrary decision not to allow users the option of sorting by file name, they have forced me to make the decision to not purchase any more of my yearly updates of Photoshop Elements. Until Adobe gives users back the sort by file name option, I too will find another program....there are other program developers who listen to their users complaints and suggestions.

Dear sirs, I bought Photoshop Elements 11 and was very astonished, that in the "organiser" is not possible, to sort the pictures in a folder after the criterion “name of picture”.

All my pictures are in folders sorted in spite of years and theme. In the folder the pictures are renamed, so I get the order of pictures, in which I want, show them.

Also I could switch them in this order easily to Premier Elements, to make a good slideshow.

You should give back the criterion immediately! It is a real and serious lack.

PSE11/PrE11 Organizer must be able to sort files alphabetically by name as my versions 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 did. Without this basic feature, I cannot use it. I have already cancelled PSE11/PrE11 and am getting a refund. I am prepared to return to PSE/PrE when this omission is addressed.

I've been a user of Photoshop Elements since version 1 and recently upgraded from version 10 to 11. Version 11 did fix some serious performance problems I was having while managing a 40,000+ image collection and for the most part I'm pleased with the product. However, I've fighting a continuing issue with the way dates and times are handled (inconsistently) in various products marketed under the Photoshop brand. This problem causes modification of or corruption of time values and one way around it would be to have the ability to display folders sorted by filename. My file names preserve the date and image sequence. Since that capability disappeared in version 11 I have no viable option. I too, want to see this capability restored in a product update ASAP (or quicker). Going back to an older release is not an option for me.

I would like to see the ability to sort pictures in the organizer by JPG number as an option rather than just by time. I often have more than one shooter taking pictures a the same time.

Brett, I work with 10 and will not chnage to 11 before you have solved the alphanumeric sorting. I rather go back to older version if necessary as the sorting is more important to me than other stuffs. As I now scan slides from 1990 and forward I need to change manually file info in order to get them as I need since I'm not scanning the slides in the order I have taken them for several reasons.

It would be nice to hear why you have eliminated such basic function that exists in windows as standard.

I have just taken delivery of Photoshop Elements 11 but, like other people cannot believe that it will not sort by filename. I cannot even make it display the filename. I think this makes it unusable and that I shall have to return it.

Yes Paul and Tamica, I realize this post is about the lack of alphabetizing the Organizer. However, if you read Ron and Jane's post above, a separate question is also asked, which I have provided an answer for. I provided an answer long ago and it gets hidden by the mechanics of how these forums work when there are multiple replies: "We are aware of [the Organizer not alphabetizing] and looking into what we can do."

I have been watching this thread since I got PSE 11 in December and haven't heard a peep from Adobe. Is this the kind of response -- or lack thereof -- that prompted Apple to move away from Adobe Flash? Adobe should give at least some kind of valid response to its customers if they want to have us spread the word about the value of their products.

I've commented several times on this thread. I can understand the frustration on this issue, but I can assure you it has nothing to do with Apple not supporting Flash Player on iOS devices (that is a rather complicated issue that has no bearing with the content of this forum).

But this is a subject that is being looked at very seriously and we hope to have more information on it soon.

How on earth can this be a photo organizer when I can't order my very old scanned photos that I have used the date as their name. I'm stunned that I just spent money on this program thinking it would be better than the FREE picasa program and I can't even sort by file name. This seems really basic to me, but what do I know, I'm just a stupid consumer that just spent $70 on a program that doesn't even do a simple function that a free program does. Shame on you Adobe if you don't fix this issue. In the future don't advertise something as an organizer when you limit it to this degree!

Good idea Paul! This obviously needs to go higher up! I'm at the point where I'll have to download a program that will let me rename the 'creation dates' just so I can sort them. All this extra work should be completely unnecessary!
