Deke's video pretty much explains the basics on focus vs sharpening detail and using the Smart Sharpen.

But also...
In Photoshop try:
Sharpen > Unsharp mask...
You can also duplicate the layer - apply heavy sharpening the bottom layer, then on the top layer mask or erase parts (like the eyes) so the heavily sharpened bottom layer is shown.

In Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and Lightroom:
Go to the Detail panel.
Kick up the sharpening Amount, and use the Masking slider to adjust if it is applied to the entire image (0), only the contrast edges (100), or somewhere in-between.
