Editing smart objects opens new document dialog

I have Photoshop CC 15.1.2 installed (Windows 10 x64) and I have a problem editing smart objects, actually a specific one. It's is a smart object created in Photoshop containing like 2 groups of ~10 vector layers. When I double click the smart object (or right click --> Edit contents) it opens the "New document" dialog. When I click Esc it closes and opens the "Recent Files" dialog. It works fine in CC 14.1. I have no idea why this specific one isn't editable, but I'm pretty sure it worked before last update.

That's curious. Only the one file? I am not having a problem either with vector files from AI, or with Shape layers created in PS, or a mix of the two.

Things to try. Delete your Preferences and try again.  And/Or try creating a test file that has the same types of objects and number of layers. If that works as expected, it starts to sound more like corruption somewhere, probably the file.  I find it weird that you are getting New and Recent dialogs. Even with the Recent Files workspace enable in my PS, I don't have this happen.
