Might be worth providing some details. Lr team fixed something, but not the problem you're having..

Confirming that this problem is not fixed in LR 5.6. I do not seem to run into problems if I only import from a card (regardless of changing file names or not during import). I ran into this when importing from another catalog on my laptop. The import appeared to work fine. However, the next time I put in a flash card, that still had photos for the laptop catalog, LR was not able to correctly determine what was duplicated and what was not and there were no file name changes, or any other file attribute/metadata changes made to the files. It's sad that Adobe knows about this but decides to ignore the problem.

I have all my iphone images in the catalog, but every time I attach my phone the 'do not import duplicates' still wants to import duplicates.

Every time I attach to import the next batch I have to go and check the last one in the catalog and manually select the newer ones.

Lightroom 5.6.

Had the same problem again yesterday. Was importing from SDcard. The SDcard was not formatted since last import, and contained some photos already in Ligthroom. I do file renaming on import. My trick is that if I see photos that Ligthroom want to import photos that is already imported, is to cancel the import dialog and then open the import dialog again. Then it correctly shows only my new photos. I have had the problem with photos taken with a Sony and Fuji camera.

Same problem as well. with 5.5 and 5.6 Importing from SD card or copying SD to hard drive and then importing shows duplicates even though box is checked.

On Win 7, 64 bit, fully updated. Repeats multiple times. No changes to file names or other data

This is still a problem in 5.6.
I'm running it on an iMac, OS 8.6.5

My import from an SD card in a reader got hung up (another issue), so I had to quit LR. I re-opened LR, started to import from the card again, and it imported duplicates of over 2,000 images (in a wacky sequence that changed within the import) that had successfully downloaded before getting hung up from the previous, aborted, import.

I'm encountering so many problems with LR that were non-existant in my old, 2.2 version. Wish I hadn't had to update.
