Lightroom: Duplicate/inaccurate thumbnails - Library module

when in library module i've noticed a duplicate/inaccurate thumbnails bug. for instance where i'm seeing it currently is on two sequential images in the library, the first is correct while the next displays a thumbnail of the first.. if i go to the develop module on the the incorrect thumbnailed image it then displays the correct image for adjustment. if i then go back to the library module the thumbnail remains wrong and duplicates the image before it.

this is not the first time i've witnessed this bug, it seems fairly common place and i've experienced it since v5 (i'm now on CC 2015.8). it's fairly worrying as most people i imagine will seek to delete duplicates and if that is due to the bug displaying an incorrrect thumbnail... i've also noticed a few others mention this bug on the forum with no official acknowledgement from adobe...

Thanks Harry for reporting this. We will look into this Issue. In the mean time can you please update this thread with following info:
- System Info will be useful.
- Where are the Images located and how are you importing them (Add/Copy etc)
- Happening for every alternative Images or just a few ?

Thanks,

If you've been seeing this since LR5, have you ever trashed and rebuilt your previews? There was a bug some time ago that could cause a corrupted preview cache, with very similar symptoms, and deleting the Previews.lrdata folder/file next to the catalog and letting them rebuild fixed it. It takes some time, but as a one-off, it may be worthwhile.

hi both, thanks for the prompt replies.

- i'm currently running CC2015.8 on a 2016 MBP, however i've also experience this issue on my 2012 cMP and 2008 cMP, albeit using the same library.
- on all cases the images are stored locally on an internal drive, has been both SSD and HDD.
- the files are always imported via Lightroom dialog copy, however i must stress that the issue has not been witnessed immediately after import, it has also been on image that have been part of the library for some time.
- this issue occurs on all file types proprietary RAW, DNG, and JPG.
- i have tried deleting the .previews file and also tried discarding and rebuilding previews with Lightroom itself. it usually fixes the issue on the affected files but appears elsewhere also.

at this point i'm happy with workarounds to combat the issue when i see it, however it is definitely something adobe should be addressing, as said previously it could lead to accidental deletion of valuable images wrongly thought to be duplicates.

Harry, will you be able to share some sample files where you have this issue, may be in a Dropbox link?

Thanks,
Sunil

Oh don't send the poor guy in circles! That bug report link will send him straight back here because this IS the right way for users to report a bug for Lightroom.

Do you rename in the Library module? And if so, what naming structure do you use?

Do you rename once, cull, then rename again, by any chance? And if you do, does a restart fix the incorrect thumbnails?

not really, i rarely rename, after a cull sure but the issue seems to arise independent of that

The trick will be trying to figure out the trigger, as if it was happening to most people, we'd have heard about it.

The trigger in the past was to rename photos, reusing names already used in the same folder.

i guess the reason i'm posting here is for help in finding the trigger. i've experienced this issue for a few years already. whether it's happened to most people or not doesn't help. thank you for your previous posts however.

Ok, let's start at the top. How many photos do you think have the wrong preview at the moment? Across how many folders/collections? And how often do you see new wrong ones appear?
