Downloaded PS update (2015.5) and now my scratch disk immediately fills up just running it

Ever since I downloaded the Photoshop CC update (2015.5) a few weeks ago, I am constantly getting alerts that my scratch disks are full and I'm unable to save files after a very short time using the software.

I have a Macbook Pro running Yosemite 10.10.5, with about 7 GB of available hard disk space.

The person I chatted with at Adobe Support said Photoshop now needs 30 GB of free space to work correctly, something about having room to save a temp file. I'm just very confused because I never had a problem in the past and don't understand what changed with the new version that now hogs so much space.

Is there a way to correct this without getting more HD space, or would the only fix be to revert to the older version of PS? Also, can anyone explain what is happening in layman's terms?

Thanks in advance for any help.
