DNG converter doesn't work anymore. It worked a few days ago, and now nothing. Status: can't convert the file. I need this for my work, my clients are waiting, and I can't change the files, so I can't open them in Lightroom. I have a Mac OS X version 10.9.5

Hi Wendy,

Sorry for the trouble. Which version of DNG Converter are you using now? Are you getting any error message while converting the raw images?

I have that issue but only with one camera.  My D850 and Z6 convert.  My Z7 will not.  It downloads and then locks up.  I hit cancel (the X) and end up with NEF files.  Then I am working with two systems.

Perhaps this is in the wrong forum, but I'll add some detail.  I typically shoot raw and download through Lightroom and convert to DNG.  Never had any issues with this process, and I prefer the single file approach.  After Catalina (MAC) and the Adobe conversion to 64 bit, performance of LR and PS in general are terrible.  Many things don't work as they should, and crashes are more frequent.  For the past month, downloading from Z6 and D850 continues to work while from the Z7, I get the download, but the conversion to DNG stalls.  After about 5 minutes, one or two photos are converted.  It basically looks stopped.  So I cancel out of the conversion.

Mac Users: this may, or may not, help your issue, but it can’t hurt! This will clear a corrupt cache or application state that may be your problem! I do this before ANY updating.

Download the free Onyx (https://www.titanium-software.fr/en/o...), select the Onyx version for your OS, download, run it, reboot.
In Onyx run almost everything in the Maintenance tab, deselecting things you may not want deleted, like Launch Services . Hit the "Options" button across from Internet and deselect more stuff like Cookies & Other Site Data, Browser History, Form Values, etc. (most of these are OFF by default). If you don’t know what something is, google it, or don’t run it, or ask me), then hit Run Tasks. After it's done it will ask for a reboot.

Also try to fix any directory damage by running Disk First Aid from Disk Utility: boot into Recovery Mode, (hold down Command-R when booting). When you're in Recovery Mode go to the Utilities menu and launch Disk Utility, say Repair Disk. When done go to Apple Menu for Startup disk and restart normally.

Just to note that Wendy is using software that's now several years old. She's using:

  • DNG Converter 9.6.1.xx that was released 19 Jul 2016 (latest version is 12.2 released 11 Feb 2020)
  • macOS v10.9.5, aka OS X Mavericks, that was also released in 2016 (we've since had Yosemite v10.10, El Capitan 10.11, Sierra 10.12, High Sierra 10.13, Mojave 10.14, and the latest is Catalina 10.15).

Things to consider:
  • Are the CR2 files Wendy is trying to convert from the same camera, and thus the same type of CR2 files that she successfully converted in the past? If yes, then the issue could potentially linked to her system requirements that change with normal use of a computer (e.g. lack of disk space, or trying to store the converted files in a location where her macOS user account has no permission to write, or trying to run the DNG converter on files read directly from an SD card in a USB reader but with the SD Card's physical write protection enabled).
  • If the CR2 files are newer versions of anything she converted successfully before (e.g. from a newer model of Canon camera), then it may potentially be that she needs a newer version of DNG Converter. Unfortunately, if this is the case, Wendy will also need to upgrade her macOS to a newer version, as v9.6.1 is the last version that works on OS X Mavericks.

Hope this helps...
