When working on high bit image (16-bit), it would be nice if there was a user selectable option in 'Color Setting...' to dither the 8-bit image displayed on the monitor. Currently, a 16-bit image is dithered only when converted by selecting Image>Mode>8-bit/Channel. But a 16-bit image displayed on a 8-bit monitor is downsampled to 8-bit by rounding without dithering. This causes banding. When editing such an image the user doesn't know if the banding is intrinsic to the image or is cause by the display pipeline.
