For new photos imported into Lightroom 4 the Distance metadata does not show up even though I have it set to show up in my Metadata panel. For photos imported with LR3 the distance metadata still shows up.

Hmm... yep, it's gone.

I actually use that field for work, not just curiosity. When I have a batch of photos of the same subject, I'd take a look at their subject distance to avoid checking focus for all of them. (My camera has some focusing problems.)

Adobe changed this behavior (perhaps during the middle of the 3.x cycle?) because in many cases the information was not accurate and did not belong in the SubjectDistance field.

Yes, the filed has disappeared from the Metadata panel sometime in 3.x, but the data was still there in the catalog — I checked in 3.6. In 4.0 it's just being stripped.

And yes, the exif:SubjectDistance is unrealiable enough to not be shown to the users by default, but it's still metadata, good for some comeras (my D80 is fine) and should bot be trown away.

It's not being stripped, it's just not being mirrored.

There's also the XMP's aux:ApproximateFocusDistance field and it's still being populated with data in LR4. But I was not able to make it show in the Metadata panel.

Anyone knows how?

The ExifMeta plugin will load any metadata from the file into the LR catalog and make it available for display and filtering.
