Hej, have a simple question for the community and hope will get a feedback :
why does a virtuel copy increase the counter of the folder of the master?
I am okay, that the catalog has in that case an item more, but not the folder where my master is stored
This confuses me a lot and I would like to get it clear
Thx for a feedback and explaination. Did not find a hint in the discussions till now
Best regards from Frankonia

The behavior I'm seeing on my LR 5.7.1 for Windows is that creating a virtual copy increases the count of the All Photographs collection and the count attributed to the folder the photos are in as well as the count for the parent folder(s) if I have Show Photos in Subfolders turned on. In other words a virtual copy is counted like any other photograph.

I am not aware that LR ever shows you a count of "physical files in this folder that you've imported" that doesn't include the virtual copies.

You can create a smart collection with the condition of Copy Name Isn't Empty to filter by what photos have a copy name, which could also include other photos that somehow have a copy name but aren't virtual copies.

You can create a smart collection or filter by Copy Name Starts With "Copy" to filter the folders where the copy name is Copy 1, Copy 2, etc, which is the default naming scheme, or Copy Name Is Empty to find photos without a copy name which would likely be the physical files and not include the virtual copies but it would also exclude a few files that might somehow have a copy name embedded in them that weren't virtual copies.

Looking around a little more, there is a Library / Filter by Kind with a selection of All, Virtual Copies, Master Photos, Videos, Reset, and you can select one of these if Library / Enable Filters is selected.

Still the count of photos in this filtered set is not visible anywhere except on the filmstrip for the current set of photos where it'll say x of y to tell you the filtered count and the total count.

I think LR used to show the filtered count at the right of each folder on the Folder panel but not anymore that I can see.

Hey dear Steve
thanks for the very detailed answer with all backgrounds.
Great, gives me as newcomer a good overview

That comment from you I think is the one, what LR is doing :
I am not aware that LR ever shows you a count of "physical files in this folder that you've imported" that doesn't include the virtual copies.

Consequences fro me is, that numbers in real folders and number in LR5 folder will be ever different, because my workflow is to produce virtuel copies when editing a picture for future use

Filter can help for a check, but will be an extrem overload for the whole archive

Thanks again for the detailed feedback
