Discard original RAWs from Lightroom CC on the iPad + keep the smart previews in sync

Here's a scenario: I upload RAWs to Lightroom CC mobile (on the iPad), via Apple's Photos app and delete the redundant copies (from Photos) as soon as everything is imported into Lightroom CC. Once the images are synced in the cloud (the original RAWs are all up there), I'd expect the Lightroom to automatically discard the originals (from the iPad) and ONLY keep the smart previews - as set by the preferences.

Instead - Lightroom keeps the originals stored locally. To make matters worse, there's no way of removing original images manually. It'll either keep the original + smart preview stored locally or delete everything from the iPad and all synced devices.

Thomas,

How are you determining whether or not the raw file is still in Lightroom?  A couple of screenshots might help us see what you are seeing.

The first one shows images synced via cloud. RAWs remain in the cloud, smart previews download to the iPad.The second one happens when I transfer images from my camera directly to the iPad, via Apple Photos. And yes - I do delete redundant files from Photos as soon as they make their way into the Lightroom. What I want / need is: smart previews on the iPad / originals in the cloud.

This happens despite my prefs set to 'Only download smart previews'. They way it should work (as I imagine) would be Lightroom Mobile uploading RAWs to the cloud, and discarding the originals from the local storage as soon as they're uploaded. So that, in the end, I end up with smart previews on the iPad.

if I understand, you can't delete the pics on yr iPad. May be you should try to delete them from your LR Classic on your PC or Mac saved in "synchronized pictures". That's how it works for me. In that case the images will also be deleted on yr iPad

I don't use Classic for the time being. I want to keep the smart previews on the iPad and the originals in the cloud. Which doesn't seem to work as intended... :(

Thanks for the screen shots,Thomas!

I spoke to the team and they advise the behavior you are seeing is expected. There is an option for you to purge these.

Tap on the Lightroom icon at the top left and choose Local Storage
Tap on the Clear Cache button

Give it a chance to do its thing. Afterwards restart the app. Are the originals gone now?
Let us know if you run into any issues.

It did work, thanks. That said - I think it should occur automatically. I wouldn't figure it out in my life. Which is why one doesn't put engineers in charge of deciding what needs to be built and how it's going to work ;) Engineers are best left sticking to the plan (my opinion). BTW, hypothetically: let's say I do want to discard an original file I've downloaded earlier on (for whatever reason). Is there an option to do it?

No direct way that I am aware of.

Right now, philosophy is: Keep the files handy until you, the user, say "I don't want them anymore" and flush the cache or you have a shortage of space on your device in which case automatic controls start cleaning you up some.

If you would like to see a behavior change, I would recommend a feature request on this site (They call them Ideas here) and see if other users would like the option as well.

Glad it worked for you!
