Photoshop: Deselect Tools for Quick Mask

I can select any tool in the toolbar - then when I go to the QUICK MASK tool for masking an image, and the Cursor remains in the PREVIOUS tool selection. Example: I select HAND for placement - then I select QUICK MASK for masking - but I cannot mask because the cursor is a Hand. Not so with other tools, they deselect and reselect the desired button-push. Please someone - point me in the right direction. Otherwise it is a software glitch with the QUICK MASK button. Thanks (p.s. I am new)

Aloha, David.  Although I have 20 years PS experience, I am new to CC.  I am finding several small but irritating problems with tools and tool interactions.  The only thing I can advise it to keep on filing reports until we get someone's attention.  Joe

Howdy David,

I'm not seeing this problem on either Win10 or Mac.  Could some other application be interfering with keyboard input?  What OS are you running?  And what kind of keyboard and mouse do you have?  Any other apps running at the same time, particularly that might react to keyboard input?

The only other thing would be that when you first enter Quick Mask aka Rubylith mode, the tool doesn't immediately change.  You need to press the correct shortcut to switch it, such as B for Brush or Z for Zoom.

Thanks,
David

Appreciate the responses - I did find what I was doing wrong. The "X" key was toggled to ERASE vs MASK.
