I would appreciate if it could be deleted in the history of concrete steps and not only the whole history of all actions.

You can clear the top of edit history without further changes to the image by creating a preset named 'Clear Edit History' then edit it with a text editor so it looks like this:

s = {
id = "...",
internalName = "No Edit",
title = "Clear Edit History",
type = "Develop",
value = {
settings = {
ClearEditHistory = true,
},
uuid = "...",
},
version = 0,
}

But don't change anything except the part under "settings = {" (don't change id or uuid).

Resave, restart Lightroom, and you're good to go.

It's my most frequently used preset ;-}

This won't help you consolidate intermediate steps..., but still it's useful.

Two questions: Doesn't work for me (preset just does nothing) - is a plugin required? And isn't that just the same as clicking on the small "X" button in the history header?

EDIT: Ah, now I understand! It clears everything above the currently selected (= applied) history step without the need to change an actual parameter! Thanks!

Edit 2: The trick with this preset is to make LR think that the preset is not empty (in which case LR would simply do nothing), am I right? It works with "HelloWorld = true", too ;-)

when clicking on the small "X" button in the history header, so it is not possible to return to the original version of the photos. Therefore, I would welcome if the erasure of history always remained at least up to return photos to their original state.

LRuser24 - you are correct.
Pa4k - the "Clear Edit History" preset will leave the bottom steps intact.

For reasons of clarity, I want to let only the main / major steps in history.

Edit: Because maybe sometimes I would like to use one of those main / major history steps.

One thing that helps is to create snapshots. In fact, it has become my ritual to make a snapshot, clear edit history, then select the snapshot, so edit history does not grow "forever", but I can tell by looking at edit history which snapshot is being displayed in the present view. To me, edit history is extremely useful when stumbling and back-tracking..., but after the dust settles, it's time to clean house...

The "Clear Edit History" preset will leave the bottom steps, but until Adobe sees their way to implement this feature request, I don't see any good workarounds for deleting/consolidating selected intermediate steps.

Note: very few changes of this ilk were made in Lr3 & Lr4, so I wouldn't hold your breath. But who knows, maybe they'll fix and finish all kinds of things in Lr5...

FWIW, I have made this request before and also suggested an essential history view.

Regarding "holding your breath": Don't do it. The LR4 feature set was practically not influenced by this feedback site. Soft proofing had been requested for a long time by some people but even that wasn't represented among the top feature requests.

Post here by all means but don't hold your breath.
