Photoshop: Invalid Checksum error

I downloaded the trial of Photoshop CS5.1. The file extracted and I received the message "invalid checksum." I chatted with a CSR in India who had me change a setting in disk utility. Then the installer wouldn't initialize. CSR asked if they could remotely run my computer to fix this. OK. Then their remote screen sharing application didn't work. CSR had no idea what to do. By now we are 2 hours into this. I had enough, said goodbye, called corporate, on my dime, transferred to customer service, got a live person, explained everything, she put me on hold...5 minutes into that I hung up. Seems to me that Adobe doesn't really want my business. Their stuff doesn't work, their people don't know how to make it work...what's up with you all??

Sorry about the trouble you encountered when trying to get help. This should be pretty easy to fix.

An invalid checksum error means that the file is invalid. In other words, you download isn't complete. This can be caused by anti-virus and other security software, by disrupted internet connections, conflicting processes, and other computer activity. Delete the file you have and download again. It would be a good idea to shut down any other programs from running while doing so to prevent future file corruption.

I tried this download 8 times. No interruptions, no internet hiccups that I could see, and always with the same invalid checksum issue. I suspect that the file on the site may be damaged. Am I the only person having this experience?

We haven't had a rash or reports so it's likely system specific.

Are they the steps that the chat agent suggested for turning off Verify Checksum?

Go to Utilities>Disk Utility

Then choose the Disk Utility pull down menu and select preferences

Finally turn off the the verify checksums option. You will want to make sure and turn it back on after they are done with the install. If they keep having problems they will want to look at their Internet Connection or possibly OS.

That is what I did. Then the installer could not initialize. The internet connection is high speed. I download things all the time that work. The OS is 10.7.3 new install of everything.

My many years of dealing with these things has taught me that while it is easiest to assume the problem is on the user end, my experience is that this is not always the case. I have been the first to report technical problems in many situations. I have worked in the IT industry. I think something is actually wrong on Adobes end.

And if only one person, on one machine is seeing the problem?

My guess would be that you're somehow getting a cached copy instead of downloading a clean copy. That or something in your network path is consistently corrupting the files (like CR/LF translation did in older FTP software).

Perhaps. I don't know the answer. So far none of the suggestions you or the other CSRs offered made any difference. I tried downloading with different browsers. I deleted old copies before trying again. I do not have this issue with any other site. Oh well. Thanks for trying!

Different browsers means that it's not your local browser cache.

Are you behind a firewall that might be caching files? (educational or corporate site)

Any chance that your ISP is caching files?

No firewall here. ISP is Comcast...I can look into that.

Comcast says they do not cache files. I am pretty baffled. Have you tried to download Photoshop CS5.1 Trial for Mac? Give it a try and see what happens.

Yep, just downloaded and installed - no errors.

But it's on a CDN. So it is possible that one local copy is corrupted while others are fine. But Akamai is usually good about catching corruption and repairing the files quickly.

Have you tried to download a different trial to see if it is just this one particular file, or more general system issue?

Hmph...exact same thing. I wonder if I tried installing from a disk if it would work.

Installing from the disk probably wouldn't run into this issue, if you have access to one. Additionally, if you have access to another computer to perform the download, that may be easier to accomplish.

Oh dear, I ́ve just consumed my entire month data plan to download PS CS6 and what a surprise. Checksum error, and then tried continue download as if it was not finished(it was) but could not extract the files and then it just delete the 1.1 GB without telling me. Very disappointed since I will no longer download it for another 20 days.
What a mess Adobe. Akamai should avoid this type of thing, and I will never use it again.Pretty much furious.
Not every Adobe customer have unlimited data plan, time or money to spare. If the file is corrupted from source the problem is even worst, destroy the image of Akamai after 10 days of launch would be really ugly.
