I'm editing raw images and then savings as jpegs. When I select SAVE AS, the default file format is tiff. Is there a way to set jpeg as the default file type?

I just opened a DNG file and saved as JPEG. The next time I opened a DNG and chose Save As..., JPEG was selected as the file format. Are you not seeing that behavior?

Another thought is to use Save For Web to save your files as JPEG.

It's a bit more complicated. I'm using Lightroom 3.5 and launching Elements 10 directly from LR. I'm opening raw images that I have initially edited in LR. Save For Web produces warnings about image size, etc. and won't work. I'm on a Mac if that makes a difference.

Ahh. That's important information. :)

What option are you using to open the file from Lightroom? Open Original or Open a Copy?

My process is as follows:
Import images from CF card
Edit raw images in LR
Choose EDIT IN option to open image in PSE
Choose Edit With A Copy of Lightroom Adjustments
