Nikon D800 + LR4 import problem with dual card system:

I am transferring files to my computer (OSX, snow leopard) via USB cable. I am using dual card system with my camera: CF and SD. I am using the "backup" option which means that the content of both memory cards is identical. NEF + NEF with identical file names.

When the camera is connected to the computer and LR4 "import" is opened, LR4 does not show "D800 1" or "D800 2" -- it shows only "D800". This means that I cannot select a card which I would like to import the files from (like I can do with D700 or D3). And most of all, LR4 reacts inconsistently on "Don't import suspected duplicates". Usually, it wants to import all images on both cards -- this means that all files would be imported twice.

At the moment, in my D800, I have SD and CF with 3 identical NEF files on both cards. "Don't import suspected duplicates" is selected. In the import window I can see that LR4 wants to import 5 files: 0474+0474 (duplicates), 0475, 0476+0476 (duplicates). So, out from 6 images it recognizes that there is a one duplicate about to be imported, but those two others are not duplicates?

I guess this is a bug or what..?

"Duplicates" means "already in the catalogue". So, since these images are all new to Lightroom, they will all be displayed. I've never heard of it understanding about dups on media, though the heuristic is uses to determine dups is filename and timestamp, so I'd compare those to find out what is going on. I suspect the timestamps are off by at least a second in some cases.

What protocol does the camera use to connect to the computer? PTP or MSC? This is a camera setting.

Because it looks like Lr is presented with the file information as one bulk collection

My advice is to use a card reader. There is no value, really, in trying to import from both media, is there? My assumption is that the CF card is just backing up the SD card or vice-versa.

Hi,

I don't now if the camera is using PTP or MSC. What I do know is that I cannot see the camera as a "mass storage" in my computer. I can't find PTP/MSC settings from my PDF manual.

The reason why I would like to transfer images straight out of camera (without card reader) is that in this way I don't need to ever again open the card slot... The risks of something getting broken are smaller when I don't have to constantly remove those cards in and out of the camera... The capacity of my cards is big enough for this, but this importing problem is a real PITA.

In any case, that screenshot (first post) has that one image (0475) which for some reason lightroom is NOT showing twice (once on each card). Lightroom wants to import it only from one card and those other two images it wants to import from both cards. NONE of those images are in my computer.

There would be no problem if I could see those cards separately in LR4. I would just select one and import only from that card. The other card serves only as a backup.

Here it is once more. "New photos" screenshot and "All photos" screenshot.

For some reason LR4 thinks that one of those images is already imported. It is not.
