Which OS version?

And have you installed all the Photoshop CS6 updates? (at least I assume you're referring to CS6, and not the very old Photoshop 6)

Have you updated your video card driver from the GPU maker's website?

it's version 10.8.5 and everything up to date as per Nov 17! Would that not include GPU software? With a Mac Powerbook, what maker would that be?

Photoshop is CS6 vs 13.0, just bought new in Sep 13!

First, you need to install the Photoshop updates.

WIth most Apple systems, the video drivers are updated with the OS and no others are available (unlike Windows where GPU vendors release fixes every few weeks).

If updating Photoshop doesn't solve the issue, then we need to look for something else on your system altering the cursor (a utility, a third party plugin, or a flash panel).
