Photoshop: CS4 using 255.3% of CPU and running out of RAM?

I continually have this frustrating problem. With a 100 or 200MB photo/graphic image(s) open, everything works fine for about 20 minutes, then things like the Healing brush tool or Blur tool completely bog down my CS4 Photoshop and it will usually stall (until I have to Force Quit) or it just quits 'unexpectedly,' or it sends up a window saying that I do not have enough memory - I have 24GB!?! I'm on a 6-month-old MacPro 2x2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon with 24 GB 1333 MHz DDDR3 memory. About to load upgrade of CS5, but need this resolved. Also, when I look at Activity Monitor, it will show "255.3% of CPU" and "85 threads" during this - I'm not that computer literate, but 255.3% can't be good. Real memory can be 1.3GB and Virtual slightly higher.

255% of CPU just means that Photoshop is using 3 of your cores. And it means that Photoshop is busy doing something at that time (but that could be scratch disk activity). Though 85 threads does sound wrong for a 6/12 core system.

It sounds like you have a memory leak - but we don't know of any such leak in Photoshop CS4 once the updates are installed.

Do you have any third party plugins installed? Have you tried disabling them?

Have you checked your system for corrupt fonts or a corrupt OS font cache? (the MacOS font system can leak memory sometimes)

Threads are constantly at 84-85 almost all the time, not just during memory intensive functions. Right now, at rest for over an hour with no image open, Photoshop is using 84 threads, 1.23GB 'real memory' and 1.38GB 'virtual memory,' but only .6% of CPU. What does this mean, using all of the threads continually.

I just looked at other screen shots, and Photoshop is always using 84-85 threads!

This similar problem continually happened on my previous Intel MacPro, which was replaced with this one with way more power, memory, etc...

I don't have any plug-ins, and Mac says it is not in their system.

As for 'scratch disk activity,' how do I clear out the scratch disk on Photoshop? I've been told that this is something that builds up in Photoshop.

Not all the threads are active at one time - they just exist.

You don't clear out the scratch disk - that is just disk space used by Photoshop while you edit images (since the images may need more space than you have RAM). It is just something that happens, and can take some time if you run out of available RAM (but isn't caused by a leak).

Can you post your system info? In Photoshop, choose Help > System Info... and post the contents of the dialog in a reply

***Be sure to remove your serial # from the system info before sharing it*** (it's about 20 lines down)

Here's something to try:

Go into Preferences>Plug-Ins... and uncheck all the options under "Extension Panels" and restart Photoshop. See if the CPU and # of threads goes down.

Next, you might want to try disabling OpenGL drawing in Photoshop preferences (under performance) --- then restart Photoshop. That will test to see if the problem is your video card driver.

OK: I disabled everything in "Extension Panels," then restarted and it was at 45 threads. Then I opened up an image and Photoshop immediately went to 85 threads and stayed there.

Then I disabled OpenGL, then restarted Photoshop and it opened with the same 45 Threads. When I opened up an image, it only jumped to 60 threads. So I opened up another large image and it stayed around 60-61 threads. I started using the healing brush and no change in threads. Then used the blur tool and no change - staying at 60-61.

So "Extension panels did nothing, OpenGL off helped. Why is this, and what is OpenGL and will it matter if all of these stay off?

OpenGL uses the computers video card and the system driver, to improve displaying of the image. It may be an inefficiency of the card/driver.

OpenGL features allow for smooth zooming and panning and some 3D functionality. If you don't use those features - or aren't aware of them - you probably won't miss them.

I have an architecture program called ArchiCAD (version 15 by Graphisoft), and it is a BIM 3D based program. Also, I can create 'fly-thru' videos with this program. Since this is OpenGL in Photoshop, will this affect my ArchiCAD? ArchiCAD allows the import of Photoshop drawings, but they are usually jpegs or flattened drawings by the time of import.

OK, so I just reopened Photoshop this morning, and it opened at 43 threads and .6% of CPU. I opened up a large photo I have been working on 223.5M/491.9M and it opened to 60 threads and 58%. After doing many healing brush commands and the shadow/highlight, the CPU% got as high as 172% instantaneously, but went right back down to around the original 58% or so. This seems to be working!

No, turning off openGL in Photoshop will only affect Photoshop. The OS and other applications are not affected.

OK - we're now rounding third base..... last 3 questions:

1. What about turning off the "extension panels?" What effect on plug-ins will this have, if any. I think all of the plug-ins I have came with the myriad versions of Photoshop.

2. I have purchase the CS5.5 upgrade. I currently have the original CS Creative Suite, CS2 Creative Suite upgrade, CS3 Photoshop only upgrade, CS4 Creative Suite upgrade currently in use. To load the Creative Suite 5.5 Standard upgrade, do I need to keep all of the old CS versions on my Mac, as these old versions all take up a lot of space?

3. How do I check the "scratch disk" load. I've been told by many friends that Photoshop really builds up, and that emptying it is critical, but I do not know where to find it and then how to empty it safely. I open lots of photographs in a sitting, and they are all in the 20-30MB range. I know how to regularly empty the cache in 3 locations:
a)User>Library>Cache (Adobe & Adobe Camera Raw files get big very fast);
b) HD>System>Library>Cache;
c) HD>Library>Cache.
And I verify disk permissions every so often and never have any issues.

I just ran through a battery of exercises, and had open a 413MB Photoshop image, a 223MB Photoshop image and a 59MB Photoshop image. Only while saving the 413MB as an interlaced PNG file (which took almost 3 minutes but I never saw the spinning rainbow, only the clock), did the CPU use go above 100% and just for the briefest instant. It is working like a champ!

I will await for your answers on the last three questions in my previous reply, but I wanted to let you Photoshop is working and let you know how relieved and actually HAPPY I am that Photoshop and my Mac can get along....

1. feel free to reenable those.
2. No. None of those apps need to be installed in order to install CS5.5. When you install CS5.5 it will ask for a previous version serial number. I'd use the Creative Suite CS4 serial #.
3. That's snake oil you've been sold. Scratch disk doesn't 'build up' - Cache's are a different thing. If you delete your cache's, you may actually slow down Photoshop, Camera Raw and/or Bridge. The Cache's give fast access to data the applications need. You may be doing more harm than good.

OK - good to know about 1 & 2.
As for the Cache, at what point will it be too big. Right now, the User>Library>Cache stands at 2.29GB (8,701 items). That's fairly big, and growing. The other 'Cache' are less than 100MB each.

That cache folder is also used by the OS and your web browsers. (in fact, they normally have most of the content in there)

So at what size does the User>Library>Cache folder become too big? It is 2.29GB now, and of that total the "Adobe" folder is 950MB and the "Adobe Camera Raw" folder is 1.07GB. How large should these be allowed to get, as it seems to be almost entirely Adobe?

That's up to you. Each app usually has it's on preferences for the allowable size of cache. And, again, caches normally don't hurt performance (keeping more improves performance).
