I am hoping I'll feel extremely stupid when I see the answer. I installed CS5 (v12.1 x64)today and opened a raw (.nef) file. It appeared on screen in a Windos called 'Camera Raw 6.3 - Nikon D7000. I clicked the 'Open Image'buton and got a new grey winfow with my filename at the top. If I I drag this by the title bar using the mouse, the photo appears in the window. When I take my finger off the mouse button, the image disappears to give me a grey window again. All this time, I can see the histogram and the image in the Background Layer. Any ideas?

I'm using a Dell Latitude E6520 with an Intel Core i7-2720QM processor, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD. I store my photos on a RAID5 NAS.
I'm using two monitors - both are full HD (1920 * 1080) with an nVidia NVS 4200M 512MB (45W) Discrete Graphics Card.
Operating system is Windows 7 sp1.

Jpg files load but behave the same. I also jave Lightroom 3.5.1 which does display
the images proprtly

Try disabling OpenGL drawing by selecting Edit>Preferences>Performance... and uncheck "OpenGL Drawing" and restarting Photoshop. If the problem goes away it's likely a video card driver issue. Go directly to the manufacturers website (nVidia) and download the latest driver. GPU and OpenGL support | Photoshop CS4, CS5: http://adobe.ly/OpenGL
