CS5 filters not working (stamp, photocopy, brush strokes, artistic, etc)

My Photoshop cs5 filters are not working. Some filters, such as photocopy, torn edges, stamp; All artistic filters; All brush strokes filters; and All distort filters are not working. (They are not grayed out--I am allowed to select them from the filter gallery--they just do not apply the effect to the image.)

SOME filters DO work correctly, such as Sketch > graphic pen

I have tried all the solutions that I've seen on forums:

- Document is in 8-bit RGB mode.
- I reset preferences using the ctl-opt-cmd method
- The layer is not locked.
- I used D to reset foreground/background colors to black/white.
Does anyone else have any additional ideas?

CS5 on OSX 10.6.8

In this screengrab, you see the images is RGB/8, Text is rasterized and layer is unlocked.

In this screenshot, you see my attempt to apply the stamp filter. It doesn't work.

In this shot, you see that SOME of the filters do still work (in this example, Reticulation)

It looks like you had the foreground and background colors set to white. Many of the Filter Gallery filters use the foreground and background colors for their effects -- and if they are the same color, you don't see much effect.
