Crosshairs permanently dislayed on image

I have an image I was working on in Photoshop CC, (Adobe Photoshop Version: 19.0 20170929.r.165 2017/09/29: 1138933  x64) on Windows 10. Out of nowhere a crosshairs with the digit 1 appeared on my image.  Even when I save and re-open the image, there it is, same place.  Close PS, reopen PS, open the image, there is the crosshairs.  It does not appear when I open the image in other programs but I would love to get rid of it nonetheless.  One possible clue:  I can make it disappear by selecting a Selection Tool but it re-appears as soon as I select any other tool.  I have attached two image, first - the one that has the crosshairs and the other a screen grab of the area of the image containing the crosshairs.  I have to suspect that if anyone opens the image in the same version of PS that they will see it too but until someone tries it I can't be sure.

So you can see the crosshairs in the screen grab but not the original image as it appears in this post, but try opening the original image in PS and see if it is there then.  Sorry for the soft porn.  It is a statue at the Hearst Castle.
