I would really appreciate the possibility to set an aspect ration in the crop tool. Currently I have to do it in the selection tool and then create guides with snap.

Which product are you using?
Photoshop, ACR, and Lightroom already support cropping to an aspect ratio.

Also, Photoshop supports rectangular selections with user defined aspect ratios.

I am using photoshop, but the regular crop tool only allows fixed sizes, i would like to change the aspect ration like in the selection tool.

Maybe I am doing something wrong. I made a pic out of what I am doing:

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/...

1: I choose the crop tool with all fields empty

2: I fill in the number 5

3 I click anywhere in Photoshop or press tab to get to the next field, Photoshop immediately adds 'px' behind the 5. When I crop now, the image is resized to a width of 5 px.

What am I doing wrong?

5 inches, 5 feet, 5 meters...

5 by itself has no meaning, so defaults to units of pixels, which isn't what you want.

Sure, I want just the ratio, no numeric value. Like you can do it in the selection tool. How do i do it?

Again, put in 5 and a unit of measure, plus nothing in the resolution field.
