How do I choose an appropriate lens for a crop vs. full frame Nikon camera?

I am transitioning to a full frame camera (D810) and want to use the FX lenses. If the lens has a DX on it, I understand what it means, but if the lens does not have a DX or FX designation, how is one to know if it is anappropriate lens for a full frame camera--whether it is a Nikkor, Tamron, Sigma, etc. Thanks for any help.

If you can't find the specs for the lens, then the only way I know to be sure is to try it and see..

But in general, if it doesn't say, it's probably not DX. Kinda like organic food, non-organic may not be labeled as such, but organic food always is.. (i.e. DX lenses are "virtually always" labeled as such).
