Corrupted PSDs: Cannot open file "because of a program error"

I've encountered this issue with Photoshop CC and CC 2014 intermittently; I've scoured the Internet and so far haven't found a resolution to this precise issue, so I'm hoping someone can help out here.

Our offices run on Windows 7 and 8, just as a point of reference, as I've seen a similar issue reported that seemed to be linked to a Mac OS bug.

The problem:
I'll work on a document just fine and save as a PSD with no trouble. When I go to open it again another time to make edits, I get "Could not complete your request because of a program error." message and I can never open the file again.

The PSDs in question use the Generate > Image Assets menu option in order to produce PNGs of several layer groups (it's for bulk social media posts). So far this is the only 'link' between the corrupted PSDs I've noticed, but it's a guess at best.

Has anyone else run into this before? Is there a means of avoiding this?

Without seeing the actual files, we can't know why they aren't opening.
It could be anything from corruption on disk or file servers, to a bug in a third party plugin.
