Photoshop: Copying layers should append numbers (01 02 03 ...), not add the word "copy" and then number.

Copying / duplicating layers in photoshop should not append "copy" on the name... it should add number to it so it's more manageable especially when exporting PNGs,

Hence: it's BitmapX 01, BitmapX 02, BitmapX 03... rather than BitmapX copy, BitmapX copy 2, Bitmap copy 3...

Great suggestion.

I think about this almost daily. I would love to see 02, 03, instead of copy 2, copy 3. I usually rename the layers in this fashion but would much rather it be the default.

Any chance you would consider this Adobe?

Yes, I think Adobe could rename them in a nicer fashion than just appending a number without any separators. On the other hand, you can always create a script or maybe someone already has.

This one for instance at least let's you bulk rename the layers after coping them. This one is nicely documented, you might be able to insert the copying you wish to do.

One caveat of using such a script is that it won't memorize what the latest layer number was when it last ran. So you'd have to insert it as the starting number yourself when you rename a second batch of layers. Bu that could be done as well. i.e. searching for the latest layer number and start from there :)

Hey Alex, thanks for the info and scripts.

Just to clarify, the issue is the addition of the word "copy" to every layer. Sorry if you do already fully understand what's being conveyed here.

How it is currently:
  • Layer + Duplicate =
  • Layer copy
  • Layer copy 2
  • Layer copy 3
  • Layer copy 4
  • Layer copy 5

Would like it to simply be like this:
  • Layer + Duplicate =
  • Layer 02
  • Layer 03
  • Layer 04
  • Layer 05

Just a minor preference of mine to have at least two place holders in numbered lists but even Layer 2, Layer 3, etc., would be fine.

I totally agree with you. The way layers are named after copying in Photoshop is very annoying. Especially if you duplicate multiple times/layers.

But it's been like this for ever and I guess it won't change. The scripts are giving us an option. I will take a look. It should not be too hard to bend one of them to take 2 place holders. I'll post here if I am successful.  But don;t hold your breath :)
