Photoshop: Copy pasting HEX values in solid color picker does not work (macOS Sierra)

In Photoshop, when I double-click a solid color or shape and try to CMD+C or CMD+V the HEX # color value, it won't let me do it. Copying makes no sound and copies nothing to the clipboard and Pasting only gives me the Mac OS error sound. I'm using a brand new 2017 iMac with macOS Sierra 10.12.5. HELP!

Hi Jason,

Sorry for the trouble copy/pasting hex values. Are you copying the hex value from within the Color Picker?
It's working for me on Sierra, 10.12.4 -- I could try to update my OS to .5 and see if I'm able to reproduce there.

You might try resetting the Photoshop preferences to see if that'll help: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/basic-trouble-shooting-steps.html#prefs

Let us know if that fixes it for you.
regards
Pete

Hi Jason,

Can you tell me more about your setup?  I just tried this myself and didn't have any problems.  What version of Photoshop are you running?  What other apps do you have open?  How about any apps which might capture keyboard input (and could be intercepting your commands)?

Try this.  Open the Color Picker and choose some color.  Deselect the HEX value but leave focus in that field.  Press CMD+A.  Did the whole field get highlighted?  Assuming yes, now try CMD+X to make it disappear.  Assuming yes, now try CMD+V to restore it.  I'm curious at which point these steps fail, because that should help track down why.

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

In Color Picker, I deselect the HEX value, keeping it in the field and attempt CMD+A but it does NOT select the number and nothing appears to happen. Basically, any attempt to copy or cut does nothing. So far, I've had to resort to control-clicking to bring up the menu in order to copy as well as paste in the HEX field.

I'm currently using a Wacom Intuos 3 tablet and the wireless Apple Magic Keyboard. Version of Adobe Photoshop CC is 20170425.r.252 x64. I don't have anything but Google Chrome and FontExplorer X Pro open typically.

Howdy Jason,

Ugh!  That's not cool.  I hate to say it, but I'm inclined to blame your tablet.  I've heard of a zillion user stories that Wacom tablets hijack all sorts of shortcuts and commands.  Try with it disconnected AND all related software disabled.  I'd be willing to wager that your problem will disappear.  If so, you'll need to report the issue to them and wait for their updates.  Sorry.

I'm sure that's not what you WANT to hear but it's most likely right on the money.  If I'm wrong, however, and taking the Wacom tablet out of the equation doesn't solve the problem, PLEASE let me know and I'd happy to do a web-hosted screenshare with you to troubleshoot the problem.

Thanks,
David

I'm having the exact same issue with my Photoshop (20170425.r.252 x64)) running on MacOS Sierra 10.12.6. I can't copy, cut or paste color/HEX codes using keyboard shortcuts. I have to right click and select copy or paste which is a huge pain in the you know what.

Copying, cutting and pasting using those same shortcuts works when I'm using the selection tool on an image, but not those damn HEX codes.

Hi Gavin,

Do you have a tablet connected to your machine?  What kind?  Are you using any other keyboard or mouse?  Are both standard versions?  What about side-car apps, particularly for screen-captures or music -- are you using any of either?

Thanks,
David

No tablet installed or connected. I do have, but I recently did a fresh install and haven't used or installed my tablet - Wacom Intuos 3 and a Bamboo.

I'm using an Apple keyboard and mouse connected to my MacBook Pro. No screen-captures. Spotify for music. Side-car apps In-Vision Craft, Adobe Cloud, Dropbox, Little Snitch, Micro Snitch.

Have you tried with those sidecars disabled?  I'm not seeing this on my machine, so there's got to be something different between our setups.  In fact, I just did a fresh install on a new, clean machine but I could not repro the problem.  That means there's got to be some non-standard element you and I have different on our machines.

Thanks,
David

I can copy any value but I can't past it, for example, in matte color (save for web -> gif).

I am also having this issue of not being able to copy and paste the hex code in the Color Picker, and select all (cmd+a) does not work as well.

I'm running Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6 using Photoshop 19.0 on a Macbook Pro, no tablets or any extra funky stuff installed, please advice on what I can do to fix this problem.

Hi,

I wanted to get to the bottom of this issue for sure.  So, I checked Photoshop 18.1, 19.0, and 19.0.1 on Mac OS 10.11.6, 10.12.1., 10.12.6, and 10.13.1 on five different machines.  The ONLY machine that gave me any grief with CMD+A or CMD+X or CMD+V was 10.12.6 with a huge Wacom tablet/screen.  I disabled that and everything worked fine.  So, it REALLY sounds like there's some driver issue.

Now, Carlo, you're going to say that you don't have a tablet.  What DO you have installed?  Screen capture app?  Music app?  Anything that might grab keyboard shortcuts (cheap little apps tend to be the worst offenders)?  Cuz I tried your exact hardware and didn't see any problems.  If you do continue to have this issue, however, I'd be happy to help you further.  Ping me here and we can do a web-hosted screenshare to troubleshoot your system.

Thanks,
David

I'm not sure which apps I have installed on my laptop that are causing the problem, since you mentioned that the problem appears only with this version of OS, I'm thinking of just updating to High Sierra, that might immediately solve the issue.

For the record though, I am going to paste the list of apps installed, maybe this can help you identify which app is the root cause of the problem and could potentially help other users that are having a problem with this version.

Thank you for help David.

Howdy Carlo,

Wow!  Lots of programs.  Nice to see you using so many Adobe apps.

While I'd love to help you, I'm not familiar with all of these apps.  My expectation is one (or even more) of these applications has co-opted your keyboard shortcuts as part of their feature set, but unfortunately, they're "hogging" the keyboard buffer.  On multiple clean machines, I have no problems, which clearly implies some third party is involved and interfering.  Does that make sense?  In my experience, the most common offenders are screen-capture, gaming, and music editing utilities (yeah, really), but it could be some minor tool or even the controls for a tablet (not trying to throw them under the bus, but time and again, these problem disappear when they're disabled or when the company [finally] updates their drivers).  Does that make sense?

Hope that helps.

Have a great day,
David

Carlo, could you take a screen recording of your entire screen? To reproduce, it may require certain panels, documents, etc to be floating or docked. Also, Are you running any system extensions? They usually show up here in System Preferences:
