In Photoshop 2014.2.1 there is a problem with converting paragraph text to point text and vice versa. If I set up a text block as point text I am able to convert it to paragraph text, but then it will not let me go back to point text (the option is not even in the Type menu). The menu options under Type also seem to change inconsistently back and forth.

Do you have more than one text layer selected?

If you close and open the file again does the command become enabled again?

Hi David,

I am definitely not seeing this with either Windows or Mac. What operating system are you running? Are you sure that this is single layer of text? Do you get this problem with all files or just this one?

I have the exact same thing happening. Photoshop CC (14.1.2) on a Mac. Single text layer selected.

I just opened a new file and added some point text, and the option to convert to paragraph text was there, as usual. I've been using Photoshop for a long time, and I've never seen this happen before.

ETA: I FIGURED IT OUT! The layer below my text layer was a vector shape, and I accidentally did a "text on a path" type of thing. *SIGH* I wish that wasn't so easy to do; normally I notice and add a new, blank layer on top of a vector layer before adding text, but not this time. (Is it possible to turn this feature off? I hardly ever use it; it's more of a nuisance than a help.)

Anyway, I deleted my text layer and re-added it, being sure not to let it connect to the vector shape layer below it, and all is well.

@Vicki - That sounds like what I might have been experiencing. If you look at the picture I uploaded you can see the big bounding box which might have actually just been a shape layer. I don't ever set type like that but this was a file I inherited from another designer. Either way, i haven't experienced it again. Thank you all for investiagating.
