When exporting from Lightroom 5.3 the Windows comments field has data that is not consistent with my EXIF/IPTC fields. It used to use the User Comment field. It is now showing data that I used to have set from a previous preset.

Hmm, I just tried an export from LR 5.3, and in my test, the current value of the User Comment field from the LR Metadata > EXIF pane was properly exported into the EXIF:UserComment field of the exported photo. And Windows 7 Windows Explorer shows that value in Properties > Details > Comments.

Here are some steps to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Which version of Windows?

2. Post a screen shot of the LR Metadata > EXIF pane showing the value of the User Comment field for a selected test photo.

3. Export the test photo.

4. Upload the exported photo to Dropbox or similar service and post the link here.

5. Post a screen shot of Windows Explorer > Properties > Details.

With this information, we should be able to narrow this down to LR, Windows, or operator.

After retesting this scenario on my PC, I am not getting the same behaviour as before. It seems to be working now. I am going to blame this on Windows.

Working on some photos tonight and I encountered the same issue. It seems to be intermittent.

Here is some more info:
Windows 7, Lightroom 5.3

See attached screenshots.

The problem lies when exporting the image to Photoshop.

Steps to reproduce:
1. import an image
2. create a preset and set user comment to "Test 1"
3. export to photoshop
4. do anything to the image and then save it (TIF/PSD)
5. change the user comment in Lightroom on the new file (TIF/PSD) to "Test 2"
6. export the image to the desktop
7. the comments field in Windows 7 uses "Test 1" and not "Test 2"

I created an example using 2 images in a fresh catalog. Let me know if you want this.

I was able to reproduce this, without creating a preset in step 2 -- I just changed the User Comment to "Test 1" directly in the Metadata pane. Obviously a bug.

Two workarounds:

a. After step 5, when you change the User Comment, do Metadata > Save Metadata To File before doing the export in step 6.

b. In Edit > Catalog Settings > Metadata, check the option Automatically Write Changes Into XMP.

Either of these will cause changes to User Comment to be written back to the file's metadata before you do an export, and that (at least in my LR) works around the bug.
