Isn't it time to retire the 2 different file formats? Can the PSB format become the new PSD?
It's awfully annoying to wait for your large file to save only to stop and tell you it's too large for PSD format....and then have to do it again.
Seems redundant to me as so many of my files regularly get hit with this notice.
What I want is there to be no limits to the PSD file size.
It's almost 2019 and 8K is upon us. File sizes aren't getting any smaller. Many of my files are 10K minimum to start. Having 2 file types (and one only moderately supported) due to file size restrictions is antiquated.

I totally agree. I sometimes wonder at the thought processes at Adobe, and whether they really listen to their customers.

I chose to use the .tif format keeping the layers and does not encounter this problem!

Yves, thanks for letting me know. I've almost forgotten about tiffs, so I did a quick search:
https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-difference-between-PSD-and-TIFF
So far, I'm experimenting with saving and loading tiffs. They take quite a long time to do both... waiting for my tiff to open....
EDIT: The tiff took over 5 minutes to open. I've had similar times with psb's, but recent psb files, including the one identical to the tiff, loads much faster. So I don't know what's up with that. The tiff was actually about 19000 KB smaller than the psb. Metadata perhaps? I don't see any visible difference between the two files.

Currently my image files are on a relatively fast disk and I can not notice a real difference in writing or reading time! But my biggest files are 1.5 GB.

My current file is on a company server but is 2.5 GB atm, and I'm not done with it. I'll prolly move the file to a local drive moving forward.

The whole problem is in the access time to remote servers ..... It is probably for the same reason that for our graphical applications generating large files that the remote file server solution may not be the most appropriate? Using a software to synchronize a temporary folder to the remote server may be a solution to put in place!

I sometimes get around it by saving as a tif with zip compression.

So the only difference between the formats is that PSB is 64bit and PSD is 32bit. This why PSD has size limits.
Time to move forward Adobe. Please retire the 32bit format or at least make it the "option" instead of the default.

You can look here and search for string "PSB" https://www.adobe.com/devnet-apps/photoshop/fileformatashtml/ As you can see some parts has a different number of bytes if a document is PSB. If section length is different then it will break file parser and there is a lot of 3rd party file parsers. So logical step would be to have PSB as default Photoshop format and for compatibility reasons you could save it as PSD.

Yes, this is what I'm saying. PSB would be renamed PSD and be the default PSD. Older 32bit PSDs could be PSDs also. But when opened a popup, as in Illustrator, could notify you it's the older version and ask if you wish to update.
When saving, if compatibility is needed, tick a checkbox.
This should be a smooth process. Not what it currently is; antiquated and cumbersome:

This should be a smooth process. Not what it currently is; antiquated and cumbersome:
- Save file
- After a long time, stops saving to alert you that the file is too big
- Go back to save dialogue
- Select PSB
- Resave
- Have every other PSD compatible app throw a hissy because PSB is in da house.

An even better idea would be for them to finally update the PSD format to accommodate file sizes larger than 2GB.

As I've discovered that's a no-can-do. PSD is 32bit, which is why the limit is 2GB. PSB is the 64bit version of PSD and it's limit is in the EBs.
