Lightroom: Colour collections and collection sets to simplify navigation & cataloging

[Update: Color labels for folders were added in LR 7.4 --John Ellis]

I find it difficult to navigate folders and collections in the LH panel. To some extent this is because I (unwisely) chose to use similar naming conventions. If it were possible to allow users to "Colour code" folders and collections it would make navigation much easier and also give me another way of "cataloging" photos. My suggestion would be a small colour indicator, rather like the online/offline indicator but round instead of oblong.

same request, this Feature would be really helpful, I just chatted about it with Axel Matt, he does not seem to know that this request is pending for so Long and not yet picked up by Adobe. Would be really nice to get it on, to simplify large structures of Folders. Please add this in.

Photo Mechanic has provided color coding for probably 10 years or more. The fact that Adobe can't or won't add this feature after years of people asking for it is so disappointing. The fact that there are other ways to organize work, such as by collections and metadata, should not carry the day; many people organize by folders and a program like this should be able to accommodate more than one approach to organization.  Come on Adobe!

A large group of us have been requesting, no...make that "begging" for color coding in Folders and Collections so we can easily locate headings such as Family, Travel, Portfolio et. We can use Label colors for rating our photos. Why can't we also be able to do this in the panel on the left? We've been requesting this for approximately seven years.. With all the competition Adobe now has from other editing systems we would think that you would honor our request to prevent us from leaving.

Color coding collections, and then sorting collections by this color would be really helpful.  As a professional I have hundreds of Collections and numerous levels of hierarchical Collection Sets.  Being able to code with a color then quickly sort what I'm looking for by color code (I would set up with one color for architectural client shoots, portraits, personal work, etc) would save a lot of time digging through several levels of Collection Sets.  It would also help by making the monochrome Collections Panel interface faster to navigate visually. Apple allows you to do this with folders in Finder, something similar would be incredibly useful.

Hello

Am I the only one who would like to be able to give a color set label to folders.

To be able to prioritize and see the difference right away with edited folders and the one you still need to work on.

I think it will be a great add to the software.

Let me know what you think

You’re not the only one. You’re merely the latest one making a simple, unimpeachable suggestion that has been ignored by Adobe for years. Let’s hope that one day they will implement this capability, which was available on photo mechanic probably 10 years ago.

We've been screaming for this for at least seven years.  I install every new update hoping that this will finally be initiated...but it never seems to happen.  With all the competition out there nowadays, you'd think that they would honor our meager request, yet they never do.  Perhaps in the next update it'll happen, but based on the past, don't hold your breath.

Look at the NEW Lightroom CC, they completely removed the ability to add color labels to photos!  Adobe clearly could care less about this and all we can do is put in feature requests and hope our voice is heard...

Like so many others, I would like to see color coding of folders and collections  - not with little dots like in MAC OS, but with full highlighting.  And as a follow-on with color coding, we'd need filtering to be able to select, filter or group folders by their color.  Just color coding, however, would be a great start.

I have so many folders and collections that I would REALLY LOVE the ability to color label folders and collections to speed up my navigation and work flow.

While an interesting interim solution, using be careful of placement as if used at the beginning of a collection name, that affects the sort order of the collections or folders. Still don't have a clue why Adobe can't implement a color coding capability for folders and collection sets and collections .  We've been asking for this for years - and been totally ignored!

Well - no, NOT COMPLETELY.  Folders now have color labels - thank you for that - but, gee, what about Collection Sets and Collections.  It's exactly the same concept and for all the same reasons as you want to be able to color code folders - to, among other things, help track the editing process precisely what collections can be used for. Kind of obvious - at least to me.  And the title of this issue includes color coding Collections!

I changed the status back to "no status" and the title to mention just collections and collection sets, so it's clear that part of the feature request is still outstanding.

Exactly. I take my best images from Folders and create a Collection from these such as Portfolio, Travel etc. Enabling color coding for Collections would complete a request that’s been running for seven years.

The support for color labels for folders is added in the latest release of Lightroom Classic. Right click a folder and choose Add Color Label should add the relevant color label for folder. You can also filter and search based on color label. Please give it a try and let us know of your feedback.

Thanks,
Bhakti

Bhakti -This is progress but incomplete. Just as you can color code a Folder, we need to be able to color code collection sets and collections.  This was all part of the original request.  Right-clicking on a collection or a collection set, to color-code those items, just as one can now do on Folders - and enabling filtering and searching - is what is needed to complete this feature.  Thanks for the progress.

Yves - I understand your point - however, I suggest you just think of colors at the collection or folder level as meaning one set of things (such as status of processing), while at the photo/image level as something else.

I think it's unfortunate that the colors associated with the folders are the same as those associated with the photos!
I use the colors to distinguish the state of development of photos, so a green color for example for a photo, means ok for use, it will not be ok to associate this status with a complete file, A collection yes, but to a folder no, I will not move my images to place them in a folder specific to this state of my picture, for me this behavior is illogical in the exploitation of the database, since it corresponds to a status!

It's now 7 years since I made this request. The level of support for it has been extraordinary.

I cannot believe that Adobe have only half implemented it.

I am well aware that they have a difficult job and that someone will always be
"picky" about changes they make. But in this case you really have to wonder if they understand how people use their product.

I suspect the normal workflow for almost all users is to import in to a folder structure then refine, sort, categorize and catalogue within collections.

It is not difficult to work out that the most useful place for colour coding is in collections. The reaction so far indicates this is the case.

COME ON ADOBE  ...  LISTEN TO YOUR USERS!

Thank you Adobe for starting to implement this feature. Could you please complete it by adding collections and sets. Ie we want to see those in colour too. Collections are where I spend most of my time after an initial sort from the folder structure.

Could you please also let us change the labels from the default set used to tag our photos? I want to use a traffic light system to show me at a glance what needs working on. This does not match up with the Metadata set I use for photos. We can already have several metadata sets (Metadata, Color Lable set). Please let us use a different set for folders. A few more colours would be useful too.

Finally, the colours are rather subtle, only coloured at the far right of the folder name. In 'Library View Options' there's the option to 'Tint grid cell with label colors'. Ie this adds a lot more colour to the grid view. Could we please have a similar option for folder labels? I would like to see the whole folder name in colour, not just a tiny, easy missable part.

Great start and looking forward to little more to optimise the functionality. Appreciated. :-)

These are all excellent suggestions on how to implement and enhance color coding of folders, collection sets and collections.  Number 1, of course, is to enable color coding of collection sets and collections - seriously missing from the overwhelming request we've all had.  Thank you!

As Jonathon pointed out...after sorting in Folders, Collections are where my time is spent, so that's where the colors are needed.

Those little color rectangles stuck off to the right side of the folder name are not what I call colored folders. Colored folders are shown below. Unfortunately, mine can only be used on the desktop and not in Lightroom or Photoshop. The following folders are enlarged, but are only  1/2" wide on my desktop.  I am not able to give you actual size on this.  My folders read exceptionally well even at a smaller size.

Notice the round color code Apple allows on their folders.

Although I definitely think it could be improved with others' suggestions above, this works 'well enough' to be a massive benefit to me and unsubscribe from the ticket.

I'm not really a fan of collections other than for syncing with LRM as I'm forced to, I primarily just use filters within folders. In fact, if filter settings within folders remained each time I restarted, I wouldn't need to ever set up Smart Collections at all...

Every time I fill in an Adobe survey or speak to an advisor at Adobe I mention this.  Maybe one day...
