Photoshop: Why does the hex field in the Color Picker Dialog accepts 8 characters?

In the color picker dialog box the maximum value one can enter is ffffff however the # input box allows one to enter ffffffff. Eight characters instead of the maximum of six.

In order to paste in #123456 or 0x123456 you need at least 8 characters.

Without the extra character space, you wouldn't be able to enter either prefix.
