Camera Raw: Color Artifacts in ACR7.1 Beta

ACR 7.1 Beta has color artifacts at the boundary of white or near white and black or near black. This only appears at odd magnification levels in the ACR window. Increasing the magification from 14.1% (Fit in Window) to 25% and the problem goes away. I have posted this along with image examples in the ACR Forum, but please let me know if Adobe would like some sample images.

So far I have only seen this problem with NEF files from the Nikon D800 so maybe the increased resolution of these images is factored in as well.

Running Windows 7 SP1, Intel HD 4000 video driver with lates updates from Intel. The following image shows the color issue between the bottles and is at an odd magnification level in the ACR window

The second image shows no artifact and 25% maginification

Strange. Are you sure that Shadow Clipping Warnings aren't turned on?

Yup, if I just up the magnification to a round number the problem vanishes...The two images I posted show that problem - no sign at 25% level. And it only happens at the transition between light and dark colors. Methinks it maybe associated with clipping, with the indicators getting confused at odd magnification levels. But careful inspection visually and with the eye dropper tool show no clipping

Ok. Eric or one of the ACR QE will have to look at it next week after the holiday.

Hmm interesting response when I tried posting my magic comment

Wonder what part of my comment triggered this response

Magic - doubtful
(Long) - Hmm
weekend - doubtful
to all - hope not

Perhaps the site thought you were invoking Dark Magic ...

In any case, it would be great if you could provide your sample image (the original NEF) to me. Please use madmanchan2000@yahoo.com. If the file is too big (likely), then try using YouSendIt.com or dropbox.

Thanks.

Eric, thanks for getting back to me. I have sent the file via YousendIt, the DNG from the Nikon D800 is a shade over 33 MB :)

I have included contact information in the YouSendIt message in case you need to get back to me directly.

Cheers

Mike

PS - did not know that "Dark Magic" would upset a family site :) But getting that message made me smile as I was having a tough day and was the relief I needed. Maybe the site itself has dark magic and detects how a poster is really feeling. It was a tough and lengthy commercial shoot.....
