Whenever I select a color, it turns to a different shade of gray. And no, this is not a Fifty shades of gray joke. I keep trying to select purple, but the color selector changes to a shade of gray. I made sure grayscale is turned off, but do not have a solution

Are you sure your document is in RGB or CMYK, and not Grayscale?

And are you sure you're targeting the image, not a mask (which can only use gray values)?

I know I'm not in grayscale, but I do not know how to check the second one. to show I'm not in grayscale:

Double check the layers palette and make sure you are targeting a pixel layer, and not the layer mask (which only works in values of gray).

Are you saying the foreground color chip in the tool panel changes to grey when you sample a color? Or does a color you have selected not paint correctly?

My guess is you have a blend mode applied on the tool settings or on the layer you're painting on. First, try resetting to the Tool settings: http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/201...
