Collapsing a layer stack should inherit the name from the top of stack, not the bottom. Perhaps this could be an option under preferences as maybe not everyone agrees.

I'm not following you.

If I have a stack log layers with the following names in the following order:

Layer 6
Layer 5
Layer 4
Layer 3
Layer 2
Layer 1

If I select all the layers and merge them, the resulting layer is named "Layer 6"

Are you seeing something different?

Ah, it seems my issue only applies when you have a Background layer, which then takes over the name of the newly collapsed stack. Otherwise, PS does indeed behave the way you describe.
